Hamburger Steak by Amiya Yakiniku Restaurant — Restaurant in Matsumoto

On our first day in Matsumoto, after walking around and exploring, we got really hungry and started looking for a good place to eat. We ended up arriving at the restaurant a bit too early—around 5:00 PM—because we misunderstood the opening time. So we waited in front of the restaurant.

After a short while, a few other people started to show up—some even came with suitcases! The staff were super friendly and cheerful. They brought out the menu while we were waiting and let us choose our order in advance. You could choose between two or three patties. Once we placed our order, we waited a bit longer and at exactly 5:30 PM, they let us in.

We sat at the counter and got to watch the chefs prepare the hamburg steak right in front of us. At one point, there were huge flames shooting up from the grill—so cool to see! When we finally tasted it… oh my god, it was so delicious. The meat was juicy, fragrant, and naturally sweet. We ate it with rice and raw egg, and added a little chopped wasabi—absolutely amazing!

They served one patty at a time. As soon as we finished the first one, the second one came out, freshly cooked. We also ordered extra meat sauce on the side, which was super rich and flavorful. When we poured it over the meat and rice, it made everything even better. Plus, rice refills were free!

This restaurant is a dream come true. Two menu items - 2 or 3 hamburger patties, with rice, miso soup, raw egg, and a self-service lineup of incredible local wasabi and pepper/spices to season your food. You can order grated radish or demi glace (amazing) too.

We were seated at the counter where we watched the line cook preparing line after line of uniform, perfectly cooked hamburger patties, coating them in beef fat for a big flame and serving them on metal grates.

The servers and staff speak great English and the menu has English and Japanese. Great welcoming environment. I was surprised we didn't have to wait in line to get in.

Very welcoming staff and fast paced seating and food due to its simple and smart concept. The hamburg steak is the highlight and well managed! The quality is there and for a bargain (if you get the 3 piece set)

Also was surprised by the desserts! Chocolate cakes and creme caramel was a satisfying end (after eating at our cozy nearby hotel)

Overall despite being near the station which is also filled other bars that has a tourist trap feel, this place is the furthest from it!
