Everyone knows chawanmushi is a Japanese side dish that comes usually with a set meal, but do you know chawanmushi has it's roots from mainland China and actually can be a main dish?
Here in Yussou is known to be the origin of chawanmushi in Japan, and the story goes by the owner tried the custard steam egg in China and brought the recipe back to Japan because he liked it so much.
The chawanmishi here is served in a bit bowl instead of the usual cup size and the texture is so fluffy and flavorful than the usual ones we had else where. The popular set meal comes with a bowl of rice topped with colorful shredded egg, minced meat and probably dried shrimp meat colored in pink I think. It also comes with a braised pork with is also a well known Chinese dish here in Nagasaki.
The restaurant is big with a traditional setup and well organized to handle the crowd with numbering queue system. The main highlight is of course the chawanmushi, while the other food were okay. Good to experience for its history...
Read moreIn my 3 week holiday all around Japan, this restaurant was my favourite and I don’t say that lightly. For me, this was the ultimate authentic Japanese dining experience. I went to other restaurants that were more expensive than this and didn’t come close to this in terms of authenticity and dining.
Word of warning, the staff here don’t speak much English but that’s ok cause you order from a tablet that has pictures on it. Also shoes off is compulsory.
I ordered the 吉宗定食 set for ¥2750 which is great value. All the dishes were spectacular, but the star of the show without question is the chawanmushi. There’s so much filling that goes in it from seafood and chicken. So good I ended up ordering a second. The drinks menu is also excellent with a wide range of choices but I recommend pairing it with some warm sake.
This is a must do when in Nagasaki. Best dining experience I...

If you're in Nagasaki for only a limited time and you're after their specialties, you won't need to look much further because Yossou is a restaurant that has the best chawanmushi or in other words steamed egg.
The building itself is quite old due to its history but it's been extremely well-maintained and clean, I went upstairs after they collected my shoes and gave me a wooden token so they know where my shoes are placed and sat in a traditional tatami-mat room and ordered through a tablet (how modern!)
I ordered their special signature chawanmushi set and I definitely recommend it if this will be your first time coming here, it was worth it and delicious and if I'm ever back in Nagasaki, I would love to come back here again.
Thank you for the food Yossou, it was delicious!
