Our first experience with Kura was at their Nagoya Sakae location. You have to use their ticketing machine at the entrance in order to reserve a spot. There are English instructions, so it was fairly simple. We came during peak hours and waited roughly 45-60 minutes for a table. You can also download the app and reserve a table in advance before you arrive. Once they call your number, you have to visit a different ticketing machine and tap through to get a table number. When seated, there is a compartment within the table where you can get chopsticks, different soy sauces, as well as matcha powder for tea! Cups can be found in between tables, above the conveyor belts. There is a hot water spout on the wall connecting the table and the conveyor belts.
Each plate is 125 JPY, but there are additional items that you can order off of their tablet. I recommend going through their tablet first, because that will give you a better idea of what is available. Typically popular items won't be available on the conveyor belt unless you're near the kitchen, because most of it will already be taken. I loved their chawanmushi / steamed egg. So smooth and silky, and it's about 325 JPY. Once you're finished with the plates, you can slide them into the slot at the end of your table and for every 5 plates, you get the chance to get a gachapon, which will fall at the top of your table. There's also various gachapon machines by the entrance - including one for actual Kura ones! They're tiny little versions of the actual plates they have.
Tip: Different locations of Kura have different menus and different prices. I found that the Nagoya one was a bit limited in the menu, but the prices are cheaper than other locations. For reference, I went to the Osaka location in Dotonburi District and it was 132 JPY per plate, but much...
Read moreIf you've been to a Kura sushi, then the experience is familiar here mostly. This generally fits the food standards and all of kura sushi, but the reason I'm knocking a star is some bad decisions with the complete automation - As a non native speaker I normally welcome digital menus, but the design wasn't great. Getting a table didn't give me an English option until multiple pages in, so I was using my phone rapidly to be able to answer the question provided before the English option popped up just foe the last 2 pages.
I'm not one to complain about a lack of English when I'm a foreigner traveling. My issue is that they did provide an English option, thank you, but didn't execute it well. I hope they can improve that in the future.
Additionally, the food menu feels like it "hid" quite a few options that my partner and I didn't realize until much later. There are multiple pages of every category, but they're not well filled in so what felt empty, and like the last page of a set, was only the beginning. This was especially apparent the...
Read moreThis is my second time to eat at Kura Sushi but somehow the feeling is exactly the same as the first one. Frustration followed by satisfaction. Like the first visit, we waited for more than 1 hour to get a table. While waiting all I had in mind was to order a lot just to make the whole waiting worth it. And that's what we did. First, I setup English language in the menu then ordered several types of sushi, salmon, fatty tuna, ramen, Japanese dessert, beer among others. Everything was fresh and so good. I love that they have baby chair that latches on to the table preventing toddlers from escaping. Hot water is available on the table for making tea and cold water for drinking is just a few steps away from the table. My kid also got to play the on the table...
