Food 5-stars, Atmosphere 5-stars Incredible food and decor, with a miso theme running through the dishes. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, though I was here only for dinner (really wanted to come for breakfast as well). The chefs at Marutama have clearly experimented with miso dishes quite a bit to have such a creative menu. I ordered miso black olives, miso-themed taco rice (that came with pickles and miso soup as well), and a stout craft beer. I liked the natural-industrial interior with all of the handdrawn/handwritten dishes and promotions with pictures. There was also quite a bit of local art on display and for sale which really added to the relaxed vibe of the restaurant. Even the counter stools looked to be cushioned with repurposed jeans (very cool). There was also a little stand near the entrance selling locally made products and foodstuffs from Marutama. I bought one of their miso cookies to go which was also really good. Pricing was reasonable as well, and the volume of food satisfying. Highly recommend. Will...
Read moreOur cruise ship dock in Naha for only a few hours I did some research the night before and found Marutama, a small local restaurant. When we got on our taxi and told the driver our destination, the driver told us "they have the best Chicken Katsu there". He was 💯% right. We saw a few Locals dining at Marutama when we entered the restaurant. We ordered 4 of their specialty, the Chicken Katsu Set, which came with the best Chicken Katsu ever, cabbage salad, steamed rice and the best miso soup we've had on this trip. I'm giving myself a phat pat on the back for discovering this gem of a restaurant and I give our taxi driver a lot of credit also be he definitely knew what he was talking about about Marutama and their Chicken Katsu. I'm 🤤 thinking about that Chicken Katsu...

This time we visited for breakfast. There are several breakfast menus to choose from depending on your mood. I chose the most popular one, the Marutama Gozen. As shown in the illustration on the menu, it already looked delicious with many dishes using local ingredients and miso, rich miso soup, salad, natto, eggs, brown rice, and other colorful dishes. I was very satisfied with the taste and quantity. I would like to try the lunch menu and will...
