🇯🇵 In Nara! The Ultimate Café for a Chill Afternoon

Coffee lover's, this is for you. From walking into the store with a beautiful exprsso coffee machine at the front counter and in the back of the store is a roasting machine. Clean white edging with amazing looking pasteries on display. Japanes people make you welcome when you walk into any store and this is no different. But watching the barrister with such passion for making the perfect coffee, I knew this was going to be a different experience. When the coffee was placed in front of me with the coffee art being a love heart. But when that beautiful silky texture of the milk and crema touched my lips it took me to a different place. Being a coffee snob from Australia, it was the best coffee I have had in Japan so far. In winter at least a tip would be to take your jackets off downstairs if your having in because the heating is on overdrive. Otherwise amazing.

A chic little cafe just a short distance from Kintetsu-Nara station. The menu is offered in both English and Japanese and as almost all of the item names are the same in both languages there should be little trouble communicating what you want. The procedure for dining in is slightly strange (at least during my visit) as they ask you to find a seat in the loft first and then come back down and order, I assume this is to ensure there's actually room for you before you order to eat in. The coffee was good, but I'd expect no less from a place that roasts their own in-house. The pastry on the other hand was incredibly good. I got cheesecake and it was certainly the best I've had in recent memory.

To me this place is a bit of a wasted potential. They make very decent coffee (ordered oat milk flat white), but serving it in a disposable plastic/paper cup also when dining in, just ruins the experience and the taste itself. Ordering was a bit messy, the staff asking customers to use some website in Japanese - it was a bit tricky, because you can't seem to be even able to pay with Google Pay (or maybe that's just my foreign card causing issues...). At the end the staff helped me, and they were even nice enough to do some customizations of our coffee. They have very beautiful deserts - they must be delicious but we haven't tried any. Also one thing that ruined the atmosphere for us was the super cold air-conditioning. Another thing I'd suggest, which many good specialty coffee places already implement - is being able to pour a cup of water.

This is a specialty coffee roaster. They have quite no of beans varieties. They do sell some desserts and cookies too. We tried their wave chocolate and garnache. We prefer the chocolate. It was delicious. As for the drinks, we had a latte (Brazilian beans), drip coffee ( Tanzanian) and yuzu soda. The latte was good but slightly on the acidic side. Not much though. For the drip coffee, it was good, mild and not bitter. Exactly what we were looking for! They have upstairs seating area and just a walking distance from nearby attractions such as Nara park. Plz keep in mind that they close quite early. Anyway, it’s Japan right, most of their cafes close early.

We ordered a Basque Cheesecake, iced Matcha latte and iced CHAMI Vanilla Brûlée latte. The cheesecake was honestly mediocre. It has a crumbly texture, but it melts in your mouth. We felt that the skin was slightly dry and thick, and did not have the burnt taste. However, it complemented the drinks perfectly. The matcha latte is very light. It has floral notes and was not very heavy on the palette. Matcha taste could be stronger. The Vanilla Latte was rich and creamy, with a deep espresso essence. However, there was not a hint of vanilla or brûlée in it. For the price and reputation, it was mildly underwhelming. However, we still enjoyed our visit to CHAMI.
