As a fan of the Mandala Club concept, having frequented them in their Singapore project, I was pretty excited when I read they were opening a pop up in Niseko where I would be on assignment for the winter season. I booked for three people for Xmas day dinner. Whilst the evening started out promising with a friendly welcome and a nice starter, it deteriorated pretty quickly from there on, and pretty much on all fronts. The main course was delayed over an hour and then when it arrived it was nothing more than a shared plate of three very over seasoned and very meagre slices of meat, a bowl of carrots, 6 small baked potatoes and a non descript bowl of cabbage. Certainly not what I or my party expected for a set menu. The service was basic (even accepting they were seasonal staff), highlighted by the lack of any serving utensils, bad banter and blaming of each other for the delays in the food delivery. The manager was equally lacking in any care factor and clearly felt that it was the customers and the newly arrived chef that were at fault for everything that was going on. The chaos permeated throughout the restaurant - and despite it being a set menu, people were getting incorrect dishes, experiencing the same delays and living an episode of Fawlty Tower (in hindsight maybe this was Mandala new strategy and the whole evening was an interactive "theatre cabaret" - one waitress did mention she likes to stand in front of the heater "pretending she is looking over the restaurant, but was really just warming herself like a rotisserie chicken as it so cold" Our AUD$150 a head course came to an end with the serving of desert. One scoop of vanilla ice cream with one chocolate brownie to share between the three of us - using our own spoons to eat directly from the communal bowl. Very odd if we were entertaining clients. Just absurd given the cost of the meal not to mention just an odd thing and way to serve. So in summary apart from a decent starter and great bread we got salty meat, with three veg, a spoon full of ice cream and a third of a brownie.
I sent a note to the manager the next day through the company's website and two weeks later they havent responded. With the options to dine in Niseko, would highly suggest giving this one a big miss - maybe they need another season under their belt to come down to earth and realise they need to seriously...
Read morewent at mandala club restaurant and the parlor because of the amazing marketing online, on facebook and on instagram. we were really excited to try this place but were overall very disappointed. very weird experience 😬
first, the place is really gorgeous. plenty of efforts were put into this and honestly the place has so much potential. but then the rest is very questionnable.
service is not great. staff is talking and laughing between them which is awkward because we were alone with another table in the whole restaurant on a friday night (already there it was very suspicious), not very responsive and dont know much about wine or the food menu. was very hard to wrap our head around this as the place seems beautiful…
food is average. its good! but absolutely not for the price. most expensive plate i ate in Niseko! wine is really not great. overpriced and no selection at all.
keep in mind this was a friday night, and our first night in Niseko after a 24h travel from veryyy far! at least we were happy to be there 😂
scheduled the parlour on the wednesday for the sake degustation. oh boy… tried to call several times the morning to change the time of our reservation, as we wanted to ski more. obviously no one answered. tricky situation when you know you can be charged a big amount if you dont show up. we finally get there on time and damn. what we were told: dj, sake pro for a degustation, good vibes. we were alone (again), we arrive there and they dont even ask if we have a reservation (which made me mad…), and the waiter told us laughing that the sake guy cancelled. another client from our hotel walked in for the same event and left when he learned there was no sake tasting. but… we then order an expensive drink to finally tell the other waitress we were disappointed for the sake tasting and told us that we still could have done it (???).
anyways. very confusing experience and we honestly felt bad for the staff. place has potential but i felt scammed. hope them the best and when well come back this will be as great...
