Jam — Restaurant in Onna

2nd visit, wanted to treat our friends from Maui to what we thought was a great place. On our first visit we showed up 45 minutes early and were allowed to sit in the waiting area, order drinks and enjoy a few small dishes. Tonight, we arrived 2 hours early due to a change in our schedule and were looking forward to a leisurely time to chat, have a cocktail, catch up. One of our friends is handicapped and had trouble going up the long flight of stairs, but he did it anyway. Instead of welcoming us with a smile, the guy just told us that it was a dessert room so we couldn’t sit there, which was totally not what we experienced on our 1st visit when we were greeted graciously by a lovely young lady. He also made it a point to mention that we were 2 hours early, which DUH we knew, and he was just rude. So we left and went across the street to this AWESOME Izakaya called Izakaya Onna Matsuri which BLOWS Steak Jam away in terms of hospitality, service and value! We ended up canceling our reservation and just had some great fresh Okinawan Lime Sours and about 10 generous dishes for less than half of what we would’ve spent at SJ. This place offers a fun island dining experience!

Firstly, the place is one huge island vibe. The decorations are tacky yet fitting and eccentric. From the bamboo chairs to fish tank next to the toilet, to the clam sinks, to the shark in the dessert area and the parrot toothpicks in the drinks; I loved every centimeter of this place!

For dinner times, especially the early shift, you're best to make reservations a few weeks in advance if you're looking to come for a specific date. Be sure to show up on time, because you only get 1.5h to enjoy your time in the main dining area before they move you to the dessert area.

My husband and I decided to do the couple's experience, which included a salad, a freshly baked bun with curry soup, meat and shrimp (option), a picture of us at the end and a little dessert afterwards. For drinks, we ordered multiple (non)alcoholic cocktails which all tasted amazing and all contained a piece of fruit which was refreshing.

All staff, from front desk host to all the waitresses to the chef who cooked our meat, were wonderful during our time there. I would love to come back sometime...

Date night, YES! My husband and I came here for our 17th wedding anniversary! We ordered tje Tiara Tahiti special and it came with a photo and you choose the frame you want your photo in! That was lovely!

Teppanyaki is always a fun way to enjoy your food! And this place did not disappoint! I wish they did include the customers during their cooking time though! Our chef was pretty cool! I believe his name tag read “IMAI”! Gochisosamadeshita! 🙏🏽🫶🏽.
