Chanced upon this place while in Susukino looking for a decent place to have dinner. They were fully booked out on a Friday night, but accommodated us when we went back for the 2nd time to try our luck as we were in the mood for shabu shabu on a cold autumn night in Sapporo.
Food was really yummy. We ordered a marbled beef set and a pork set, as well as some ume drinks. Sets came with appetiser, vegetables and some ramen. It was altogether a great experience and most unexpected. Staff were really hospitable to make sure that we had a comfortable meal.

As an American traveling in Japan, there are a few meals you just have to try: ramen, sushi, and of course, shabu shabu. This place—Hokkai Shabu Shabu in Susukino—gave me one of the best first big meals of my trip.
I honestly had no idea what I was doing at first, but one of the hostesses spoke a little bit of English and went above and beyond to help me. At first, I was a bit embarrassed trying to figure everything out, but she made me feel comfortable, taught me how to cook the food properly, and made the whole experience smooth and enjoyable.
The quality of the meat and ingredients was excellent. Yes, you cook your own food, but that's part of the fun—and the result is delicious! I even had a big table all to myself, since shabu shabu is usually served with a large pot, and it felt special even eating solo.
If you've never had shabu shabu before, don’t let that stop you. This place is welcoming, tasty, and 100% worth a visit. I absolutely loved it.

The staff was very responsive and would come as soon as you pressed the bell. Our neighbors were a little loud and we could hear everything since the walls weren't that thick. I'm pretty sure we were too...
