Soup Curry Suage (Sapporo) – A Detailed Review Introduction Soup Curry Suage is one of the most famous soup curry restaurants in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Known for its rich, flavorful broth and fresh ingredients, Suage has earned a strong reputation among locals and tourists alike. With multiple locations in Sapporo, it is a must-visit spot for anyone wanting to experience authentic Hokkaido-style soup curry.

Location and Accessibility Suage has several branches in Sapporo, with its most popular location near Susukino Station, making it easily accessible for both locals and visitors. The restaurant’s central location allows diners to explore nearby attractions before or after their meal.

Ambiance and Atmosphere The restaurant has a cozy, modern, and welcoming atmosphere with warm wooden interiors and soft lighting. The seating is comfortable, but due to its popularity, there is often a wait during peak hours. The service is friendly and efficient, reflecting Japan’s high standards of hospitality.

Menu and Specialties Suage offers a variety of customizable soup curry dishes, where diners can choose:

Protein: Options include crispy fried chicken, pork, lamb, seafood, and vegetables. Broth: The standard soup is tomato-based with a deep umami flavor, and some branches offer additional variations. Spice Level: Ranges from mild to extremely spicy, catering to all preferences. Rice Portion: Served separately, allowing diners to adjust their portion size. Signature Dishes Suage’s Crispy Fried Chicken Soup Curry – A customer favorite, featuring tender chicken with a crunchy coating. Lamb Soup Curry – Unique to Hokkaido, offering a rich, gamey taste that pairs well with the flavorful broth. Vegetable Soup Curry – Loaded with locally sourced Hokkaido vegetables, perfect for vegetarians. Taste and Quality Suage’s soup curry is known for its deep, aromatic broth with a perfect balance of spices. Unlike traditional Japanese curries, this version is lighter yet packed with flavor, enhanced by slow-cooked ingredients. The vegetables retain their natural sweetness, while the meats are tender and juicy.

Pricing and Value Prices range from ¥1,200–¥1,800 per dish, making it affordable for the high-quality ingredients used. The portion sizes are generous, ensuring great value for money.

Overall Experience ✔ Pros:

Rich, flavorful broth with customizable spice levels. Fresh, high-quality Hokkaido ingredients. Friendly service and cozy atmosphere. ✘ Cons:

Long wait times during peak hours. Limited seating space at some locations. Conclusion Soup Curry Suage is a must-visit for food lovers in Sapporo, offering a delicious and authentic take on Hokkaido’s famous soup curry. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a repeat customer, Suage delivers a memorable dining experience with its rich flavors, high-quality ingredients, and...

Located on level 2 of a somewhat secluded building off main street. Came 10 minutes before their lunch opening hours and was met with manageable queue, soon a queue of greater length was forming rapidly. Was seated 1 hr 10 minutes later and served another 12 minutes after. The online menu had English availabile, however only the item name and picture was presented with no description rendering item of similar names confusing.

By far one of the better soup curry that lives up to the hype - a statement I do not say likely. I ordered the Suage Special Curry which cost 2280 yen, rather on the pricer end but it is definitely justified from the generous servings of protein. The broth was available in 3 flavors, original, squid ink (+150 yen), and shrimp (+150 yen). The Suage Special Curry is a bowl of soup curry filled with a wide variety of protein choices: fried boneless chicken, thick slice of bacon, braised pork, and sausage to name a few. Each of the protein are absolutely delightful in its own right, I mean it. The bacon had a ham texture balanced out by quality fat, the braised pork melts fragnantly in my mouth, the boneless chicken was crispy on the outside (despite soaked in soup) and tender on the inside. The sausage size was rather comically small and thin but that's not the reason I got that dish. The shrimp broth that I opted for was prominent throughout, consistency well achieved. I highly recommend first timer to get this dish due to the diverse solid choice, one is bound to hit.

The spice level on the other hand was subjectively deceptive. The restaurant uses a scale from 1 to 10, where the seventh level and above requires additional charges. I had level 5 labelled "very spicy" but it could be barely considered as spicy personally. For people who can handle spice, do consider exploring higher levels. Besides the protein, the complementary vegetable was lovely was well, with special mention to the pumpkin and broccoli. The boiled egg was the weakest link all things considered - unremarkably plain.

Would I come back again? Yes! But- I'd advise myself to come 30 minutes before the stated opening hour, it will disproportionately pay off in my favor. I urge everyone to get the Suage Special Curry at least once despite its relatively high price, it...

This restaurant has a high rating so we had corresponding expectation when we waited in the long line. It turned out to be not so outstanding so we are quite disappointed.

Don't get me wrong, the food is not so bad. However, being acceptable does not mean it's good.

We ordered a grilled chicken and a mutton, and two lassi with different flavours. The yogurt drinks were good, and at good price.

The soup curry itself is where I think there should be improvement. The lamb meat is quite overcooked and tough, without much taste characteristic of the meat, not to mention a good one. The chicken is more tender and juicy but lacking qualities of a good chicken meat.

The carrot and the potato chunk in the soup is quite large in size. Not only is it too much for a bite but the flavour of the soup curry could penetrate only a tiny proportion of the mass, leaving the veggies a bit like an after thought to the dish. The same did not happen to the thinly cut and skilfully roasted pumpkin, which taste deliciously coupled with the soup flavours.

My main criticism is in the curry itself though. As a soup it lacks enough savoury, while as a curry, it lacks the finesse of an artful blend of the spices. The effect to me was a bland and oily mixture of a few ingredients which tastes had yet to find ways to work together.

I certainly hope the people who are responsible for the restaurant improve on their specialty dish, but I wish more that the people who give ratings and reviews to restaurants would be more independent...

Getting queue number and waited for quite awhile, then once number is called, have to queue physically again to get in the restaurant. Took us almost 1hr 30min to order and another 15 minute for the food. The fried brocoli that comes with the curry is delicious. Overall, we think it's nice that we tried it but it's not really for us, we will prefer the usually Japanese curry. Still glad we tried it and tried as such a remarkable restaurant.
