Disappointed by Disrespectful Treatment Toward Foreigners

As a traveler from the U.S. who has visited Japan multiple times, I’ve always admired the hospitality and warmth of Japanese culture. But this yakitori place in Hokkaido was a real disappointment. I walked in late at night, and at first, the staff seemed welcoming—probably because they assumed I was Japanese. But the moment I spoke a single phrase in English—literally just “one person, please”—I could instantly feel the shift in attitude. It was subtle but very real. The chef made a strange comment, saying, “We don’t have samura here, go to XX street for samura,” while pointing me toward the door. I wasn’t even sure what that meant—maybe it was meant as a joke, but it didn’t land that way. I told him I just wanted skewers. He reluctantly seated me—away from all the Japanese customers, in a corner that felt purposefully isolating. At first I didn’t think much of it, but looking back, it felt humiliating. When the food came, the owner’s expression was cold and unfriendly. He also rushed to take plates away, sometimes before I had even finished. 近年の過剰サービスから比べると、少し雑に感じる部分もある、 やはり飲食店の価値は『美味しいもの』と、改めて認識させられる。

여기 야끼도리 전반적으로 잘합니다. 닭꼬치, 염통, 껍질, 츠쿠네를 시오 타레 하나씩 총 8개 시켜먹어봤는데 고기 질, 식감, 불향 모두 훌륭합니다.

외국인에게 불친절하다는 리뷰가 적혀있긴 하지만 불친절하다기보다도 저 리뷰 당시에는 외국손님 받아본 경험이 많지 않아서 그런것 같고 번역되는 구글 리뷰를 좀 의식하셨는지 오늘 다녀왔을때는 가게 들어올때 야끼도리집인데 괜찮으세요, 일본어 메뉴판밖에 없는데 괜찮으세요 라고 말씀 먼저 해주셔서 그런지 몰라도 차별한다고 느끼거나 불쾌하진 않았습니다. 음식 나오는 속도도 주변 일본인 테이블 대비 그렇게 늦진 않았고요.

오히려 서버분께서 의사소통은 잘 안되어도 적극적으로 주문 받아주실려는 모습이 보기 좋아서 괜찮았습니다. 일본어만 쓰여있는 메뉴판 다 알아보긴 어려워서 (근데 이건 이동네는 관광객 많이받는곳 아니면 로컬 중심인 곳이 다 그런거 같긴 해요..) 메뉴판 밑에 가게 인스타그램 QR코드가 적혀있어서 인스타 사진보고 주문했네요.
