Harajuku is renowned for its vibrant kawaii culture, boasting numerous themed restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops throughout the neighbourhood. I was introduced to Anakuma Cafe by friends, which translates to 'bear in a hole' in Japanese. This unique takeaway coffee shop features a bear hand dispensing orders through a hole in the wall. Conveniently located, Anakuma Cafe is a mere three-minute walk from Harajuku Station. Its distinctive bright green façade, designed to resemble a forest, provides a striking contrast to the bustling Main Street. The menu offers an assortment of beverages, including black coffee, latte, iced tea, and frappuccino, accompanied by snacks such as canelé and doughnuts.

Beverages at Anakuma Café are priced between ¥1,200 and ¥1,500 each. However, a discounted breakfast set, including a doughnut and drink, is available for ¥700 on weekday mornings between 7:30am and 10am. Orders are placed via tablet, eliminating the need for interpersonal communication. One of the seven resident bears, living behind the wall, will deliver the order upon preparation. The café's website provides information on each bear's name and work schedule, allowing patrons to determine which bear they will encounter during their visit. During the waiting period, the bear will interact with patrons, offering candies and gestures, thereby providing a therapeutic experience through laughter. This entertaining experience is particularly valuable for travelers seeking...

Anakuma Café is hands down my favorite coffee spot in all of Tokyo! I was so excited to visit, and it absolutely exceeded my expectations. This charming, cozy café near Harajuku is a true gem.

From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by an adorable and welcoming atmosphere. Ordering is simple - you use the machine on the left—and then the magic begins. The star of the show is the adorable bear who prepares your coffee with care. The bear doesn’t just make great coffee; it adds a personal touch by writing sweet messages on a small blackboard to communicate with you.

The wait is brief, but the experience is made extra special with delightful little surprises while you wait. During my visit, I even received a free drink voucher for next time! It’s these thoughtful gestures that make Anakuma Café such a heartwarming place.

Of course, the coffee itself is fantastic - rich, smooth, and absolutely worth every sip. I can’t recommend this café enough! Whether you’re in Tokyo for a short trip or a long stay, make sure to visit Anakuma Café more than once. It’s an unforgettable experience full of charm and...

🌟 ANAKUMA CAFE Harajuku – More Than Just a Coffee Stop 🌟

Hands down one of the most unique and delightful cafe experiences in Harajuku! ANAKUMA CAFE isn't about your average coffee shop vibes — it's about stepping into a little moment of magic, where a fluffy, mischievous bear paw reaches out to interact with you through the wall! 🐻✨

We had so much fun playing along — giving high-fives, receiving our drinks, and laughing as the bear responded with surprising personality. It's part interactive theater, part kawaii madness, and 100% unforgettable. This isn’t your grab-and-go espresso bar — it’s an experience that makes you smile, laugh, and take about a thousand photos.

🎭 To anyone grumbling about the price of the drinks — you're missing the point. Yes, the coffee is good, but what you’re really paying for is the creativity, the showmanship, the adorable atmosphere, and the memory. It's not just a cup of coffee — it's a story you’ll be telling your friends for years.

Highly recommend for travelers, couples, families, or anyone who needs a little joy...

This was one of the best coffee drinks I had in Tokyo. This place was cool to support as they 1) hire individuals who are recovering from emotional disorders, and working at this shop is a step towards them reintegrating with society, and 2) they are bringing awareness for deforestation. You don't have to speak to anyone, just place your order on the tablet by the money-taking machines, and when you have an order, you submit the ticket to the hole in the wall. The bear paw will give you coins for a Gacchapon machine in return and you have a chance to win fabulous prizes like free dessert or drinks. We ended up getting two free drink coupons so we have it to a couple who was watching/curious about the to-go-only coffee shop. The service is excellent, adorable and just a highlight in the Harajuku area. Please go and support their shop.
