Bar Track — Restaurant in Tokyo

It’s true - guests are not permitted to talk above a whisper (which is rather strange considering the lighting is unpleasantly bright, like a school gymnasium). FYI, foreigners are sometimes asked to leave for talking.

Middle-aged, male staff only. Generally, sulky and impolite. Most of the time they stand around shaving ice trying to be cool. Regulars equally unfriendly.

Sound system works fine, but staff only play typically eclectic and/or unsuitable music whilst flatly refusing all suggestions and requests. Can’t say this adds anything to the ambience described above.

Drinks are average, but overly-priced compared to similar establishments in the area. There is no food other than some stale nuts and banana chips in large communal jars.

Lots of cigarette smoke and dirty ashtrays.

In summary, if you like drinking overpriced alcohol in a bright room amid a thick cloud of smoke, rudely poured by miserable men, whilst listening to crap music and not talking to anyone, then I would highly recommend this...

This is a place that you come to if you are depressed and lonely, and do not want to talk to anyone else. You will see lots of expressionless faces, and if you are with friends and having a great conversation and laughing, you will be hushed many times. Fine, there are some snacks (banana chips, rice cracker & nuts etc) that you can fill up as much as you like, but for a seating charge of ¥800, and drinks of an average of ¥1000 and up, and no Japanese omotenashi, I definitely feel it’s not worth it. Japan, being such a lovely place, this is one of the last places I would spend my money in. As a foreign resident in Japan for more than 15 years, I cannot understand the reviews they are getting. I believe, it is either by the regulars or they pay for the reviews. Towards the end when our party was laughing, they told us we were too loud. This is definitely the place for uptight people. Don’t go here if you love yourself. Apparently the only way one can appreciate music is sulking in silence while starring at an overpriced drink.

They have a 900 yen cover charge (standard for location). The bar is beautiful and spacious inside. The staff and atmosphere, however, are rather unpleasant. We were the only people at the bar having a conversation, and a staff member rudely approached us saying that we were being too loud and they (the staff) couldn’t hear the music. (We really were not being loud). There is NOTHING in the bar that indicates that you can’t whisper/laugh/have fun, etc. They also had jarring music changes that went from smooth jazz to country music played off key.
