I've been here a handful of times and most recently came just two nights ago to the the Kenny Barron trio with my mom and her friend. We love this Jazz Club, and it's a rather luxury experience for not too high of a price considering everything.
Let's start with the venue--the actually performance area is in the basement of the building. You walk into the lobby ;which is two levels above) and there's a wonderful, black and white photo collage of all the jazz legends. Down the steps from the lobby is the reception/waiting area. And then down the stairs from there is the performance hall.
The way the hall is designed, there are no bad seats in the entire place. You see the stage from all angles. You can seat for as little as around 1,100 yen (but this is only a seat charge, including the actually price of the performance and food and drinks).
Now the food--they have a delicious, varied menu. Some of our favorites are herb salad, the spare ribs, and spicy shrimp. They also have chicken ajillo, fish and chips, clams casino, pizza, curly fries, and of course some good beverages. My mom and her friend ordered herb salad, spare ribs, shrimp, clams, fish and chips, and wine decanters. I had the seasonal parfait, and it was top tier. I also had a coffee highball that was great.
We spent about $250 for three people. Admittedly my mom and her friend over ordered. The serving sizes are actually decent, shareable, and many patrons just get a drink and one dish. You don't have to go there and spend a ton of money.
The snow was great, exactly 90 minutes long.
It's worth nothing there's also an elevator off to the right side of the building. You can use it if your handicapped, but you have to call to request the service or send someone down to the reception to ask an employee.
10/10 every time. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for some jazz in an elegant...
Read moreIf you want a truly pretentious experience, then Blue Note Tokyo is the place to go. I had the most idiotic experience there last night. I was a guest of the band and given comp tickets. I showed up with my girlfriend and was given one of their seat order numbers: the last one. When we finally were called in I was told, "We have a seat here for you and your partner can sit over there. However, if you pay 3,500 yen extra, you can sit together here, or for 2,000 yen extra, you can sit together there." I looked at the guy and said, "In what universe does a a guest of the band have to sit separate from their partner or pay "extra" to sit together?" I took the 2,000 yen extra seat and said I was still going to contest it after the show. Well, that proved futile. When the manager came by to see why I was refusing to pay a seat charge for a comp, he smuggle said with a fake smile, "Please pay. Please pay. Please pay." After I did, because I didn't want to cause trouble for the group, he got a smiley look on his face like, "We got your money!" It actually goes beyond this because, it wasn't really about the money. It was the attitude of the staff. They run the place like a hotel. It even looks like the lobby of a hotel and those restaurants you see attached to hotel lobbies. When I met up in the bar with one of the band members after the show the waitress too was pressuring us to buy a drink even though I said the guy was with the band and we were just talking for a couple of minutes before he goes to pack up. The look on her face was like, "Does not compute...does not compute." Screw this place. The Beatles could come back for one show and even if I was given front row center I wouldn't step foot in...
Read moreIt was my first time at the Blue note Tokyo. The reservation made was because there was vacant seats. I sat close to the stage, which made it possible for me to see the performers up close and personal. . Although the performance was not what I was expecting, I enjoyed watching the performances. . The problem I had there was the food. We (2 people) ordered the set menu that served a 4 course meal. Also on top of that we had the drink (wine half bottle decanted) menu with fish and chips. . Every single menu was mediocre at best. The amuse amuse bouche, The salad (with fish?), reminded of food I would buy at a コンビニ。 The only difference was, that the dishes served were worse. . The fish from the fish'n chips was too oily and not fresh, - giving me the vibe that it was a frozen dish to start with. To be fair the chips was okay. . The main menu was something that would be served at Gusto's or Skylark. It was edible. Desert, I just left it sitting there. I couldn't put it in my mouth. So sad. . The food in total (including the wine) cost around 30,000 yen. It really ruined my experience at the joint. I would strongly recommend people to stay as far as possible, or have something to eat before coming here, and just stick to water, or a bottle of beer. . The whole experience excluding the food, was 3-4 stars, but this totally would depend on who is performing that night. The vibe was good, and people were having...
