CoCo Ichibanya Kichijoji SUNROAD shop — Restaurant in Tokyo

I recently visited the Coco Ichibanya Curry House located on Kichijoji Sun Road, near the end of the road, close to Seiyu. This restaurant is incredibly famous across Japan for its customizable curry, and the brand also has branches worldwide. I’ve previously tried Coco Ichibanya in Bangkok, Thailand, and Jakarta, Indonesia, so I was excited to experience the authentic Japanese location.

The ordering concept is consistent across the countries I’ve visited, which is great because it makes the experience familiar yet exciting. One of Coco Ichibanya’s highlights is its fully customizable curry menu. You can personalize everything from the rice portion size and curry type (pork, chicken, beef, seafood, or vegetarian) to the thickness of the curry, choice of toppings, and spice level (ranging from mild to very spicy). What makes me surprised is they even offer options like vegetarian curry, naan bread, and udon noodles, making it a versatile spot for different preferences.

I chose a standard curry with my preferred toppings, and the flavor was just as delicious as I had hoped. The curry had a rich, savory taste with just the right balance of spices and a comforting, hearty texture. What surprised me the most, though, was the portion size. I didn’t order any extra rice or sides, just the normal portion, but I found it to be quite large. I couldn’t finish it by myself, which was unexpected since I don’t usually consider myself a light eater.

What’s even better is that while the price isn’t exactly cheap, it’s very worth it considering both the taste and the generous portion size.

The restaurant itself isn’t that wide, but it’s efficiently laid out with plenty of tables. I didn’t have to queue when I visited, possibly because I went during weekday lunchtime. As with most Japanese restaurants, ordering was done via an iPad system, and they even had English translations available, making it very foreigner-friendly for those who don’t understand Japanese fluently, like myself.

The ambiance was comfortable, making it a pleasant spot for a meal, and the service was excellent. I didn’t have to wait long for my order, which was a bonus.
