If I could give zero stars I would. This was the worst experience I've had so far during my time in Tokyo.
I came here with a couple of friends on a Saturday night for some drinks. We each had one or two cocktails, and one of my friends ordered a 900 yen, 7-item assortment tasting plate. After my friend ordered the plate, the waiter brought out a tray with bread and some kind of octopus roll (there was one piece for each person at the table). We did not give it much thought, thinking it was either part of the 7-item assortment plate or was service by the bar. The waiter then brought out another plate with various assortments of food. It was a much bigger plate than my friend who ordered it had anticipated, so everyone at the table shared it.
When we asked for the check, the waiter handed us a bill that included a 2,700 yen charge (for the 900 yen assortment plate) and a 1,200 yen charge for "bread." I asked the waiter what the 1,200 charge was for, and he informed me that it was for the bread and octopus rolls. He also said that the 2,700 yen charge was because they gave us the assortment tray for 3 people (900 x 3) even though only one person ordered it. I asked why we were given the bread and octopus tray even though we didn't order it, and the waiter said that it was served to everyone at the bar. I pointed out to him that no one else at the bar received that tray. He responded by saying it was for those who ordered food. At that point, I was disgusted with the service and sick of arguing so I did not direct the waiter's attention to two groups who had food in front of them but not the "bread" tray that we were given.
Assuming giving us three sets of the assortment plate was an honest mistake on the part of the waiter, the 1,200 yen tray was just ridiculous. It wasn't clear to me if the bar was trying to rip us off because we were a group of foreigners, but I will certainly never come back to this bar and would advise others to look for other options. For both assortments of food, the waiter did not inform us of the cost (or increased cost), and proceeded to charge us for food we did not order. Please also note that they say explicitly on the drink menu that there is "NO COVER CHARGE!!" I guess their way around the lack of a cover charge is to mandate the purchase of...
Read moreAs an Ebisu local I visit Drunkard regularly. I think the food is excellent and decent value, starters through to dessert. In particular I recommend the beef, though it does take longer to prepare. Great choice of drinks and wine too also priced in line with Tokyo expectations. The one gripe some people have is the cover which arrives when ordering food, personally I don’t have an issue as it is...
