Lizarran Sangenjaya — Restaurant in Tokyo

We (2 of us) came in for a drink and a bite at about 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon and not really intending to stay for long. The place was 1/4 full but we were told that we had to have a counter seat and couldn’t have a table seat. When we sat at the counter there were no knives or forks or wet towels so I had to go and get them myself from another unoccupied table. I can understand if a restaurant is full that they would want to optimize seating however this was not the case and the place was emptier when we left than when we entered. It would have been nice to have the space of a table. We didn’t order much but were disappointed all round. The table charge of almonds were overtly salty, the Iberico pork skewers were spongy and not well cooked at all and to be honest pretty disgusting, the squid ink paella was bland and unappetizing and had shards of mussel shell in it, however the liver mousse and the crab pinxtos were fine if uninspiring. They didn’t have red wine sangria and the white sangria came without fruit and tasted like juice. Small beers too. The staff were unresponsive robots. Will not come back. You can spend your cash...

Three of us made reservations for an early dinner. We preordered an eight course meal with unlimited drinks. With a Go-to-Eat promotional discount the meal was very reasonably priced.

The eight courses included three tapas (pintxos), shrimp in garlic sauce, jamón with papás y huevo, seafood paella, and a rich chocolate cake dessert. I’ve spent some time in Spain so I’m not sure anything stood out as exceptional compared to what you can get in a pintxos bar in San Sebastián but the overall quality was very good. The jamón was excellent.

The only small consideration is the small serving sizes as is typical in Japan. It was plenty for my wife and guest, but I could have ate another plate or two.

One thing I like about living in Tokyo is the variety and quality of international cuisine you can find here. At Lizarran, I could enjoy authentic Spanish cuisine. I tried the Prefix course and along with the wine pairing, it was the best choice for a great dinner in Tokyo. Great value for money as well! We started with pinchos, and they take great pride in their pinchos, for a good reason as they were delicious! Then Tapas, Plato Fuerte, Ajilo, Paella and Dessert.
