Schmatz is located at the east end of Nakamichi in Kichijoji in a basement. It is a German restaurant with German food and beers. I was very impressed with it. The place, surprisingly, has plenty of room. It is very comfortable and relaxing with nice decor. The Manager, Inagaki San, and staff, were most gracious, friendly, and hospitable. They have a diverse menu with some interesting items. We started with skewered deep-fried ham with a gorgonzola sauce (very tasty). Next, smoked duck with balsamic dressing (mouth watering). Then, big German meatballs with a cream sauce and fried vegetables (soft juicy meat and the sauce that made it so delicious). After that, a Caesar Salad (The lettuce was grilled, very unusual, but interesting. All the ingredients were fresh and made for a great combination). Lastly, prosciutto (This came with a small cup of sauerkraut and a small cup of pretzels. I didn't understand the pretzels, but ate them with my beer. The sauerkraut, however, when wrapped in the prosciutto, gave it a very unique flavor. I loved it.) For beer, we started with Frau Gruber pale ale, a very tasty beer (a slight sweet fruitiness that added to its flavor, but a bit heavy on the carbonation). Next we tried a bitter hops IPA (It actually wasn't so bitter, but good body and rich flavor). Finally, we went for something more normal, dry hopped lager (very refreshing). On the whole, this was a great experience and a wonderful restaurant. I highly recommend it. However, I would suggest making reservations, especially on a weekend. We came early on Thursday night, and it was already starting...
Read moreAs a German living in Tokyo and therefore being heavily deprived of German restaurant food, I definitely had to try out this place! The menu is mostly focused on south-german food (Schnitzel, Spätzle, Brezeln etc.) and different types of beer, but especially when it comes to alcohol (as it is normal in an Izakaya) they have a wide range of drinks to choose from (I definitely recommend the honey lemon sour - it's one of the best sours I've had!)
Even though a bit pricey in my opinion, the food is definitely delicious - however, some of the dishes don't follow the original German recipe and will surprise you when you're expecting otherwise. For example, the Schnitzel will come out with a wild berry sauce, Leberkäse is served fried on a stick with cheese sauce and they have banana and raspberry flavored beer - not typically German at all. Aside from that, I recommend trying this place out if you feel deprived of German food or just want a...
Read moreI had lunch yesterday with my family. We waited for 1hour and 5minute to get out food. We were the first one to arrive at 11:30 and only got the food 12:35. We ordered burgers and lasagna. The burgers were burned. And the half of my lasagna was cold. I had to go talk to them cuz we were the first one to get in and everyone else was eating and leaving . Also , we didn’t even get water not even once while the other table had it. Very disappointed. It’s not common in Japan to get the food that late. I live here for 30years. When I questioned , they didn’t say sorry just explained saying the pasta takes long …. 1hour and 5min? We said for the food for so long and it comes burned. And cold. On the top of being that bad , was pricy …Very disappointed. I highly...
