This is the best omakase. Full stop.
I've held onto reviewing this restaurant until the end of our trip since we've had several other omakase courses in Tokyo, but none of them came close to beating Sushi Wa-sabi.
This cosy sushi restaurant has a nice, relaxing ambience with a range of traditional antique pottery and cookware behind the counter. The serving plates and tableware were also quite pleasant and complimented the food well.
The service was great. Almost everything was prepared in front of us between the chef and his assistant, who worked seamlessly together as if they've been partners for years!
The chef was charismatic but non-intrusive. He spoke some English and had a handy translator that he used often to explain his dishes and even to chat with us.
The course was amazing. I won't be able to explain every dish fully but the pictures spoke for themselves. Every ingredient was so fresh, so pretty, so flavourful, and so authentically prepared - yet hints of creativity were occasionally added to reflect the chef's brilliant personality.
All the dishes were perfectly executed, with utmost Japanese craftsmanship but somehow he made all it seemed so easy and relaxing. It was amazing to watch.
We've been to a good number of omakase both in Tokyo during this trip and overseas, and I can confidently say that none had bested Sushi Wa-sabi, even those that seemed more premium.
We will definitely return to Sushi Wa-sabi the next time we visit Tokyo. Thank you for such an amazing meal...
Read moreBook it. You won’t regret it. My husband and I went this weekend and it was one of the best meals I’ve had in my life. The chef is so friendly and thoughtful. He even has a little translator machine to make conversation with English speaking customers. Only about 9 seats so very intimate. Each course built on the one before in such an intentional way. Seasonal ingredients, amazing technique. The steamed egg custard with oyster, firefly squid, monkfish liver, stuffed spawning squid, filefish with liver, fatty tuna and of course a big uni bite were the highlights for us. Squid and eel are in season right now so they were featured throughout in different textures and preparations that delighted and surprised throughout the meal. The staff recommended sake based on our preferences and it was a wonderful addition to the meal. I’ve lived in Japan for 7+ years, I’ve had a lot of sushi. This is our place. A wonderful introduction for those new to omakaze and want an elevated experience in the mid-range omakaze price point. ¥25,000pp and worth every single penny. I made a note on my reservation that i didn’t like plums and he made the horse mackerel roll with a section different for me (cucumber and ginger notes instead). You can feel the chef’s passion and love into every piece. Highly recommend for a nice night out with your partner or to celebrate a special occasion with friends/family. Reservations are a must for dinner...
Read moreThis was a highly anticipated dinner to celebrate a special occasion, and Sushi Wasabi did not disappoint.
The chef is clearly passionate about creating perfect traditional sushi, but also innovative and unexpected dishes. The uni (sea urchin) was perfection, and the crushed ikura (salmon roe) with white truffle was shockingly good. The menu changes regularly, so just sit down and eat what the chef puts in front of you.
I’m not sure what else to say other than that it was one of the best meals of my life. If you’re in Tokyo and want a fun yet exquisite sushi omakase experience, this is the place.
Some higher end sushi restaurants can be a little intimidating and serious - Sushi Wasabi is not that kind of place. The chef was highly engaging and entertaining. He speaks good English, and uses a little translation device to communicate more complex (and hilarious) thoughts. You’ll feel comfortable here whether you are Japanese or foreign.
Interestingly, they’ve also chosen some lovely wines to accompany the sushi! This is unusual but worked very well. The typical things like beer and sake are also available. I’d suggest asking the chef or staff what they recommend.
Reservations essential and credit cards are accepted. It’s certainly not cheap, but actually reasonably priced compared to similar...
