Popped in on Saturday for an early lunch. I've tried a few times, but they're closed on Weds and Storm Alex forced a closure on Fri. I DM’d them to ask if they would be opened and got a very swift reply assuring they were!
On arrival, it was busy and full of a mixed crowd - young adults, families and builders. Their menu caters for wide tastes, diets and intolerances so it's no wonder why.
It was wonderfully bright inside. Artworks and plants dotted inside and protected from the winds by the plastic windows - this was rolled up as the winds calmed down allowing some fresh sea air and fab views. I loved how the ceiling was made up of this plastic, so it allowed light through whilst covered with this beach hut style bamboo.
The waitress was friendly and told us there was a seat inside. The owner was busy zipping in and out ensuring tables were cleaned whilst also making conversation with everyone. After a large table left, she reshuffled the tables so that everyone had ample space. This was reassuring me that the owner obviously cared about the hygiene and cleanliness - something even more important than ever in the current climate.
The food was delicious. I ordered the Buddha bowl with smoked salmon and my bf ordered the halloumi burger. We both tried each other’s and were so pleased with our choices. Creaminess from the avocado, smoked saltiness from the salmon and tang from the beets, hummus and dressing. I've been off sweet potatoes for ages, but the ever so lightly seasoned sweet pots have made me hungry for them again!
The prices were what you would expect in Jersey and not outrageous. We both felt it was worth it anyways.
I enjoyed reading the owner’s story - she said she quit her nursing career to follow her dream of owning a beach cafe and has always been interested in nutrition and is trying to reflect this through her menu. As a food science and nutrition grad, I'm pleased with this emphasis on nutrition and am excited to see what's next.
We finished off our lunch date and walked off our food around the beach and Mt Bingham. Thanks thegoodeggjersey ! I'm inspired and I'm going to buy some sweet pots to make my own...
Read moreWould give zero stars if that were an option. We came here specially as heard how highly it was rated, but the ordering system was ridiculous. We didn’t stay as I spent 10 minutes queuing for myself and my husband to order food only to watch the lady on the checkout in dungarees with a very strange approach to business catching up with someone else who was ordering, 3 in front of me, rather than taking orders. Lots of others were grumbling about this too and leaving. Went to the nearby Henri’s so we could still enjoy breakfast with a view and I encourage everyone else to do the same.
EDIT: reply noted from owner and I would have been very understanding had this been explained to me, but the waitresses, who walked up to the queue several times in order to take orders from those ordering drinks only or return menus to the holder did not say a peep about this. As I already stated others were heard complaining about the same so it can’t have been explained to them either. I’m afraid this therefore justifies the one-star review, and if you don’t want to receive them, train your staff and improve your service. As you can see from my other reviews I always try and write a positive review of a business where it is justified, as I don’t derive any pleasure from writing negative ones, I do it so others don’t have to repeat the experience I had. But I do hope your head chef is feeling...
Read moreWe arrived at St Helier early on Friday morning. We dropped our bags off at our hotel and did a google search for a breakfast spot. We found ‘The Good Egg’. It is on the promenade. We found a table, perused the menu and decided on our preferences for the morning. I chose the ‘Scottish Bowl’, a meat lovers feast. Here, you are not waited on, you must place your own order at the counter and this took a while because of the number of patrons. It was not much of an annoyance considering this was our first hour in Jersey and we were on holiday, but I did imagine how frustrating this could be in colder or inclement weather. Anyway, on to the food. It arrived quickly, well presented, a huge portion and piping hot. What more could a hungry, greedy man like me want? I tucked in and oh, how wonderful this dish was. There was everything a heart stopping breakfast needed; Butter fried haggis and black pudding, sausage, egg, oh and some carbs in the way of heavily fried flatbread, with a healthy portion of avocado, to keep the heart pumping. I am just so grateful that I did a HiiT workout the day before. That cancels the meal out right? No matter. I have resolved to have this again before I leave this...
