We were greeted warmly, and the atmosphere and ambiance of the restaurant were exceptional. We tried a variety of dishes, including their “Greek Salad.” As a Mediterranean native who has dined at numerous establishments along the Turkish Riviera, in Greece, and Italy, I have a particular appreciation for authenticity. Unfortunately, the salad was notably lacking in one of its key ingredients—olive oil. This omission was surprising, as any chef or restaurateur familiar with Mediterranean cuisine should know that olive oil is essential to a traditional Greek salad.
Naturally, we requested some olive oil, which took an unexpectedly long time to arrive. To our further surprise, basic condiments were also missing from the table. Initially, we didn’t think much of these minor inconveniences. However, the true shock came with the bill: we were charged extra for 50 grams of olive oil—approximately $2.
For context, you can purchase a decent 500ml bottle of olive oil for around $7-$8. Charging for such a small amount felt incredibly stingy, especially considering olive oil’s integral role in Mediterranean cuisine. To add an insider’s perspective, my family has been producing olive oil for three generations. If the olive oil had been of exceptional quality, I might have understood the charge. However, it was far from premium.
This experience marked the first time I have ever been charged for olive oil in a restaurant, and it left a sour note on an otherwise pleasant meal. Charging for such a basic and essential ingredient not only detracts from the authenticity of the dish but also reflects poorly on the restaurant’s commitment to quality and hospitality.
Henceforth, I will not be dining at this restaurant again. For any connoisseur of fine dining, do yourself a favor and avoid the stinginess of this establishment. There are plenty of other places that offer both quality and hospitality without...
Read moreI've read some other reviews of this place and had to see for myself. First, I have to say the hostesses are total snobs. I just don't get this thing here where restaurants insist on reservations when more than half the tables are enpty. We walked up last weekend and they refused to seat us because we didn't have a reservation so we left and had perhaps our worst meal in Almaty at a neighboring restaurant. So, I made reservations this weekend and when we walked up they immediately tried to turn us away again and I said uh, uh, uh, we have a reservation!!! And I gave my name and suddenly her body language changed, she smiled and took us to our table.
After that everything was amazing. Our service was perfect. The food was perfect. Even the weather was perfect, but I guess I can't give Afisha credit for that. We sat on the balcony overlooking the opera. We couldn't have asked for a better table. We started off with the tuna tartare, then he had the lasagna and I had the halibut on a bed of pike caviar. After, we split the cheesecake. I can't believe I forgot to take pictures of the food. Somehow I did.
I would give the place 5 stars if it weren't for the snobby reception we received both times we walked up. I guess they're trying to go for that ultra cool vibe but it's a real...
Read moreAfter several visits, I understand how it is one of the most popular eateries in Almaty. I can only imagine how a permit was obtained to turn a second floor apartment in a residential building into a cafe. Still, I should say that the upper patio is absolutely amazing – Opera and Ballet Theater looks stunning from there in the evening. Pretty much everything we tried so far was quite delicious. A few things stood out to me. I'd say one of the best burgers in town. Just a perfect amount of everything – proper size, neatly assembled, not too saucy, flavorsome patty. Also, tacos. While they have nothing to do with the traditional carne asada tacos or any other authentic Mexican beef tacos, they are simply delectable. Roasted bone marrow also deserves to be mentioned. Vibrant and creamy texture. Loved it. I think they should highlight the cocktail menu more. There are some exciting mixed drinks often featuring local landmarks and traditions in one way or another. There are also horse and camel milk distillates. I am yet to find the courage and try them. Overall it is a great location, lovely atmosphere, attentive service, and delicious food. Sounds to me like a recipe...
