Reframe Coffee Roasters — Restaurant in George Town

This review is based on my latest purchase of coffee beans from their website. I have been a regular online customer for several years, but this latest purchase has made me decide that it will be my last. I ordered 1kg of Ethiopian beans on Sunday night, 18/8, and to my surprise, it was shipped the next afternoon. Based on past order experiences, it normally takes 2 or 3 days to roast, pack, and ship the beans. I received the beans on 21/8 and opened the pack on 23/8 to try them. The pack was labeled with a roasting date of 19/8, but when I brewed it using a pour-over method, the usual foamy bloom from fresh beans was absent. I tried a few times and confirmed the absence of a foamy bloom. This was shocking and disappointing. Based on my personal pour-over experience, a minimal shallow bloom usually starts after 2-3 weeks once the coffee bag is opened. So, this pack of 1kg beans was definitely not freshly roasted or roasted on demand. The fact that the roaster decided to send me a pack of non-freshly roasted beans, probably knowing they were not fresh but assuming the customer wouldn’t mind or notice, is the reason I decided not to ask for a replacement and also not to purchase from this roaster anymore. It’s a shame because, while I don’t make regular purchases from them, as a coffee lover, I love to explore beans from other roasters, but I would come back to them from time to time to try their new beans. I would have given 1 star if this was my first purchase, but since I have been purchasing from them for quite a while, 3 stars is the maximum I can give now.

ETA (12/9/2024): The business owner contacted me several days ago to address the issue I mentioned in my comment. He provided a detailed, polite, patient and sincere explanation of the possible reasons for the situation, assuring me that his coffee beans are always roasted on demand. He took full accountability for ensuring a perfect overall customer experience and promptly sent me a freshly roasted replacement pack to make up for the unfortunate situation, even though the unfreshness could have been due to a third-party issue.

I’m impressed by the owner’s dedication to providing the best coffee experience to his customers, even after the sale. I have been to many cafes and had so many good coffees around the world. Same as you, I read review before I went to this cafe, we thought this cafe earned good review so we brought our family including my parents to have a good time.

During that point of time, only the younger ones drink coffee and my parents didn’t feel like drinking due to their limited menu selection. So we were trying to order for everyone but not our parents.

The barista seems not happy and shown us their bitter face, and said everyone must order one coffee minimum. We have no choice so the younger ones have to drink two coffee each person on behalf of our parents.

They don’t even serve water.

I am not impressed with the coffee, I am not happy with their bitter cold face.

They don’t have the basic friendly customer service.

They spoil our beautiful weekend family gathering time.

Spend your money wisely and there are so many other great places that would appreciate our support.

The service in the cafe is quite good, but not the network ( or maybe only that day). I was attracted by the high rating reviews in google but I am slightly disappointed. I ordered ice mocha, less ice, more coffee, less chocloate with a more bodied taste. The first thing I noted was the portion of coffee is quite small. Secondly, as it is ice, there is no spoon or anything I can stir on. So I can only swirl the cup hoping it would mix well but it didnt. There was sendiment at the bottom. For mocha, I actually think that it shall consist both chocolate and coffee taste and one of it comes first while the other one appears after you swallow it. But there wasnt any of them. The coffee taste is not strong and has a bit stronger sour aftertaste which does not go that well with mocha in my opinion. The coffee tastes relatively diluted. I will probably go for the service but not for the coffee.
