A Disappointing Experience – My Last Visit to This Restaurant

Dining out with family is something I truly value, and I love introducing them to new places. Sadly, this restaurant, which I had high hopes for, ensured that this third visit would also be my last.

We ordered four main courses: the chicken chop was decent in both presentation and taste, the pasta was average, and the pizza was acceptable. But the fish dish was an absolute disaster and ruined the entire dining experience.

While all the other main courses arrived on time, the fish dish was delayed without explanation. After waiting for what felt like ages, I had to follow up twice, only to be brushed off with, “Coming, coming.” It wasn’t until the third time I followed up—after mentioning that my family had already finished their meals—that the dish finally arrived.

When it did, I was completely shocked. The moment the dish was placed on the table, an overwhelming fishy smell hit us. At first, I thought I might be overly sensitive, but as soon as I cut into the fish, the stench became unbearable, even catching the attention of my family members across the table. It was unmistakably bad.

I couldn’t bring myself to take a bite. When I raised the issue with the staff, they reluctantly removed the dish without offering any explanation. Their attitude was dismissive, and, shockingly, not a single apology was given.

While they eventually took the fish off my bill, the poor service and lack of accountability were even more disappointing than the dish itself. I had hoped to introduce my family to a great restaurant, but instead, I found myself apologizing to my parents and telling them, “Let’s not come back here again.”

This experience left me deeply dissatisfied. With such poor food quality and service, this was undoubtedly...

La Provence, tucked away in a quiet part of Horizon Hills, was such a gem of a find.

While on the pricier side, the menu was extensive and supported by a specials board, which added to the appeal. My mistake for assuming it was Italian—looking back, the name should have given it away.

Ordered a Margherita pizza and initially thought it odd that there wasn’t a basil leaf to complete the traditional Neapolitan look (symbolising the Italian flag). That said, it did come with the classic chewy dough and charred corners—not for everyone, but oh so satisfying for me.

We had two sides—oysters and fried calamari. Both were excellent, so much so we finished them before my wife even arrived. A small faux pas though: the shucked French oysters weren’t fully separated from the shell before serving. For the price point, I’d have expected that to be done. Intentional or a mishap, I’m not sure.

For the mains, we went with the wait staff’s recommendations (who, by the way, were extremely friendly and attentive without being intrusive). The grilled lamb shoulder was generous in portion—slightly gamey, with the herb marinade not fully masking it, but still tasty. The accompanying green peppercorn sauce was excellent, as you’d expect from a French restaurant. The grilled chicken with pesto pasta surprised me. The pesto sauce was less herby than I’m used to, but the pasta was clearly freshly made. Some may find the texture unusual compared to dried pasta—it reminded me more of wantan noodles—but personally, I loved it.

All in all, a solid experience. We’d definitely return to explore more...

Place: air-conditioned restaurant that specialises in western-french based cuisine. They have daily specials and desserts with a wide choice of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to choose from. Service: The waitress (Mae) was friendly and greeted us almost immediately upon entering. She took the trouble to explain to us the parts that we don't understand and all that while teaching the lesser experienced staff. Even provided a chair for our bags. Used plates and utensils were replaced and cleared from the table quickly. Very observant. (All credit valid as I was the only table being served) Food: 1. Wagyu tender shoulder (3-4 marbling) steak: already sliced upon arrival without any further seasoning after being sliced. The side slices were well done while the slices in the middle were medium well done (I ordered medium), perhaps it was left for a bit too long after being sliced. The beef texture is to be expected of wagyu beef. The side sauce rich in flavour and wine was a delight to go along the wagyu and compliments it excellently. Could do with a little more of the side vegetables, as it finished way before the meat. The side potato was a little too (vege) oily for my taste. Verdict: 4.75/5. 2. Traditional salad: fresh with a touch of acidity topped with a poached egg that burst opens after cutting into, making this salad a nice starting dish. The fish could be well chopped up into smaller bits beforehand, and it would make it easier. Verdict: 4.2/5.
