Had a great lunch at Pekin Sutera (there are several outlets in JB). No photos since many others have posted lovelier ones.
Had the following - Yam Basket, jellyfish starter, crispy pork (siew yoke), BBQ pork ribs (3 pieces minimum order), half a Peking duck, wat dan horfun (medium portion, not in menu), homemade beancurd, jasmine tea and braised peanuts appetiser served at each table.
All the dishes were tasty and well made; not overly salty and portions were generous. We could do with one dish less since our table comprises of senior citizens. I'd skip the yam basket (RM38) and Peking duck (RM42 for half), and try something else.
The standouts were the signature ribs (RM42 for 3, minimum order), which were quite large and cut at the table. Lovely piquant sauce, meltingly tender with enough fat remaining. Msian pork is super when cooked well, and the siew yoke (RM32) had the combination of crispy skin, meat and unctuous fat. The sweet plum sauce was totally unnecessary; would have preferred some English mustard.
The signature beancurd was done well - pan-fried with a nice toasty crust, drenched in a tasty brown sauce. Ordered by the piece (RM3 per piece).
The wat dan hor fun with seafood (RM18) was fab with great wok hei and a sauce just thick enough to coat the hor fun. Ask the service captain about the noodle-horfun options and prep methods.
I know people gripe about the standard appetisers on the table. We tried the braised peanuts, and they were great and tasted like they were prepared in-house (RM5).
Service was superb - attentive, but not intrusive. The captain advised well on quantities so we wouldn't over-ordered. Definitely a great destination for a celebratory meal or a treat.
They open at 11:30 am, and not 11 am as we thought, so plan accordingly. On a Monday, the restaurant was about 75%...
Read moreGood experience for my past few times dinning in this restaurant, but today really give me a terrible experience on the charges of fruit juice. Before we order the fruit juice in jug, we asked the lady that take order from us about the price of the jug fruit juice for Mango, orange and carrot cause the fruit juice in jug's price did not state in the menu for all juices. She went to confirmed and share with us that for mango juice and carrot juice are RM 38 and Orange juice is RM 28. Then again we asked do you put sugar or water to the juice cause we want no sugar and no ice, she replied they don't put sugar, water or ice. Then we proceed to order 1 jug of carrot juice and 1 jug of orange juice but when we make payment we were charged fruit juice RM 38 X 2, we raised to the person at counter named Sam on the Orange Juice was charged at wrong price as we were told is RM28 but he gave us all sort of excuses in charging us the Orange Juice more than RM28 such as saying the person that told us Orange Juice is RM28 don't know the price and etc, then end up charging us RM 36. We felt so cheated and give me really...
Read moreApparently one of the best restaurants in JB, but what a letdown!
dishes came out sporadically and we had to halt our eating because there was so much gap between one dish to the next.
floor staff aplenty, but was very inattentive to needs of diners- such as refilling of water and tea. I had to go to their service station to get our own tea. Even changing of plates after eating prawns, had to be requested.
dishes were average in taste. Don’t see what the big fuss is about this restaurant. Stir fried duck was super salty. Tofu was forgettable. Steamed fish also rather average.
they allowed a horrible dinner event in the same hall, separated by a curtain. The MC of that event screamed all through our 90 mins dinner, and singing loudly. If you take a reservation for an event like this, put them in an enclosed space so as to not disrupt other diners! We couldn’t even talk to one another while dining!
All in all, a 3/10 experience. Pekin Restaurant is super...
