"Come, I bring you to a place where I always eat" After 20 min drive from his office, we arrived in front of the restaurant which is located in the Klang city centre. After we took our seats and he placed an order, he continued "don't judge a book by its cover, although this place doesn't look like much, many big taukeh including those public listed boss came here just to eat" my customer who has lived in Klang most of his life told me. Words that carry weight.
That certainly intrigued me - I looked around and noticed that everything looked dated. Quite tired and seriously in need to be refreshed if I may say. Everything is just the way it was when it opened for business from the first day. The signage had already faxed - the wordings were hard to read. Damn even the plates and spoons had the vintage look.
◾Steamed fish - you don't have ask what fish because they only have 1) one fish - pomfret and 2) one style of cooking - steamed; lastly covered with their homemade sauce consisted of minced garlic, bird eye chilly soy sauce (and some I couldn't identify) before garnished with chopped spring onion. Such a perfection in this dish that you'd see one stainless steel dish with the fish on almost every table.. fish was cooked just right and the concoction tasted like a match made in heaven. ◾braised Hokkien mee - the dish i liked the least because instead of using the normal thick noodle, they used yellow noodle which had the alkaline taste. Taste-wise it was quite good ◾stir fried cabbage with pork and prawns - I didn't expect such simple dish could get my eyes gleaming. First bite and it revoked memories back in those days where my grandmother cooked for me. It had the old school taste that I love. ◾Stir fried tapioca noodles - similar to CKT but using tapioca noodles, it ticked all the right boxes in terms of colour, smell, taste and wok hei. It's be great with see hum but sometimes life is just not perfect. Not many establishment offers tapioca noodles these days.
I ended up sapu-ing most of the dishes there. No menu, selection is limited and the service could get grumpy sometimes (I witnessed first hand) due to the mood swings. But that doesn't stop the regulars from coming again and again. Not many places offer this kind of cooking style anymore. One more place to bring the family next time.
PS they call this restaurant a Klang Hilton due to the high price but I guess it’s the price to pay for quality. Don’t be shocked...
Read moreA well known Klang restaurant which has been in business for over 40 years. Do not judge the restaurant by its facade. Siow Tiow is known as the “Hilton of Klang” due to its high prices for relatively simple Chinese dishes. However, a meal here never disappoints. Siow Tiow uses the freshest ingredients of the highest quality for all their dishes.
They are best known for their steamed fish, deep fried prawns, dry char kuey teow with raw egg on top, oyster omelette and stir fried fish maw. There are also an array of other Chinese noodles (both fried and soup based), seafood and stir fried dishes available.
The restaurant has a very simple setup and is bare and very spartan. However it is air-conditioned, clean and relatively comfortable. Go early for lunch (by 12.30pm) and dinner (by 6.30pm) as Siow Tiow operates relatively short hours and gets packed out daily with regular customers.
There are some nuances or quirks to note with Siow Tiow in terms of service (next to non-existent), the attitude of the wait staff (rude to say the least) and pricing (expensive). There is only 1 chef who does all the cooking and food preparation on his own back in the kitchen and there is only 1 single person waiting on all tables in the whole restaurant.
For a pleasant dining experience, one must overlook all these shortcomings (I would refer to them as quirks) and just go there for the food. It is always about the food at Siow Tiow and nothing else. Only 1 condiment bowl is shared among the whole restaurant and refilling of your teapot is self service. Just assume self service for all aspects while dining and manage your expectations in terms of service accordingly.
Although pricing is on the high side, portions are adjusted based on the number person dining at a table. Be prepared to pay RM80 to RM120 per person depending on the types of dishes ordered. Only Chinese tea and mineral water is served at the restaurant but you are allowed to bring your own beverages (no...
Read moreAt first, I walk in and ask for menu. He said they never provide menu. So we just order 3 simple dishes by assuming these food won't be expensive until where.
At the moment I sit, many walk in customers was chase out with rude tones due to most of the tables was reserved.
I feel weird why rejected the business. It should be the dreams of every business man.
Inside the premises, there are a lot of flies flying around. To my surprise when I pay the bills, it is 3 times than my expectations. I wish if can, I will report to authorities but it is my fault as I should insist for menu to confirm the price.
For the quality of the foods, it just normal and not as premium compare to the price.
This will be my first and also my last visit to this restaurant as I'm not interested to join the crowd for the limited table and limited operation hour. I consider today...
