This Kopitiam offers Volcano Curry, Fried Rice, Braised Noodles, Char Kuey Teow, Nasi Kukus, Yong Tau Foo (Fried mostly), Wan Tan Mee, Beef Noodle, Stir Fry (Noodles, Dishes), Pan Mee, Chicken Rice, etc.

Service: 3🌟 Is okay but no touch and go for drinks.

Atmosphere: 3.75🌟 Two shop lots on the ground and One on level 1. Here during lunch sitting on ground floor. Overall feels stuffy and hot for some reason, not all tables have nearby fan.

Food: Beef Noodle 3.5🌟 It's good, the soup is clear yet quite flavourful. Tendon is a bit soft for my taste and the meat is thick and some is a bit rough and some is a bit tender. Don't mind to come back for it sometimes.

Food: Wantan Noodle (Dry) 3.5 🌟 I like the dry sauce mixture and Noodle is springy and nice. However the Chai Siu (BBQ Pork) is a bit on the dryer and lean side. Nothing special about the Wantan, very small.

Food: Nasi Kukus 3.5🌟 Curry, 3.25🌟, Acar 3.25🌟, Sambal 3.25🌟, Ikan Bilis & Peanuts 3.25🌟, Chicken 3.75🌟 The curry drizzled on top of the rice is quite good but too little (can add 200% more). Acar (they do pickled cucumber) is nice and appetizing but too vinegary/sour (can reduce 33%). Sambal is ok and sweet but very spicy and too salty (can reduce 70% salt). Ikan Bilis is very crunchy and nice but also very spicy (has special chili sauce) and is too salty (can reduce 50% salt). The chicken (drumstick plus thigh) is superb as the skin is crispy and strong and nice fragrant flavour and the meat is tender and juicy. However the skin is a bit salty (can reduce 10-20% salt). The steam rice portion isn't big but all the items are very strongly flavoured so you don't need (or can't) add anything extra except maybe more rice or chicken.

Food: Assorted YTF 3.25🌟 Beancurd Skin 3.25🌟, Lotus Root 3.5🌟, Brinjal 2.75🌟, Fish Paste Roll 3🌟 Beancurd Skin is unique, never see before and it has veg inside. Lotus Root has fish paste in between and its nice and crunchy, just a bit too dark color and probably fried for quite awhile. Brinjal is undercooked and has slight weird smell. Fish Paste Roll has weird texture like not fresh meat plus its very dry, I'm not sure what meat is it actually. Priced at Rm 10

Drinks: Chinese Tea (Cold) A bit bigger glass than usual....

Hong Zhi Poached Village Chicken Rice Review:

The actual name of this kopitiam is Eng Huat as is evident from the signboard. There are 17 stalls operating inside the shop purveying a good variety of kopitiam food. This review solely focusses on the stall that sells village / free range chicken rice.

I've been patronising Hong Zhi for many years and he's one of my chicken rice go-tos. It's a double shop lots located in OUG, facing the OUG market, a very busy area in the morning. It may be congested in the morning but parking is not an issue as there's ample basement parking below the modern market.

Hong Zhi only sells one type of poached chicken, i.e., village chicken. Meat is firm and chewy (not tough) with good bite. Even without soy sauce, the chicken has a subtle brine flavour and good to eat on itself. Dipping sauces - soy, chilli, ginger - are nice and tasty. Same goes for the oily rice and soup.

With such good feedback, I'd be giving it full score, right? Unfortunately, no. Reason being the quality can be subpar sometimes. I've ever experienced the chicken missing the mark on more than one occasion. Due to this inconsistentcy, the score can only be 4/5. The inconsistency, for all we know, could be due to chicken or poaching method quality control.

The other thing that should be pointed out is that the iced coffee served in this kopitiam cannot be considered good. Discerning coffee drinkers will outright call it bad.

Eating here, one must also be prepared to tolerate bad stench wafting in from the rubbish dump behind the shop. Not constantly but ever so often when the wind blows in a certain direction. Often enough to be more than an annoyance.

Finally, for those who'd like to try but find it too far to come to OUG, Hong Zhi has another stall run by his son in MJ Wang Kopitiam,...

This kopitiam has a variety of food offerings from Pork noodles, wanton Mee to chicken rice and beef noodles. In terms of food, we tried:

  1. Beef Noodles 4🌟 I think of of the better stalls here.. Beef noodles here is nice and yummy. The soup and noodles is very nice also.

  2. Penang White Curry Mee 1 🌟 One of the worst curry mee I have tasted. Doesn't even taste like curry mee even after adding curry spices.

  3. Fish Head Noodles 3 🌟 Wasn't really expecting this as the noodles look really delicious.. So so taste only.

  4. Pork Noodles Dry 3 🌟 Homemade Fishballs and Pork balls is nice but the pork noodles tasted so so.. average only.

Was expecting a delicious breakfast as the place here as it used to be quite famous. However was dissapointed with the food quality here as went through a lot of hassle trying to find parking...
