Extremely Disappointed – Misleading and Inauthentic Experience at Saravana Bhavan

I’m honestly very disappointed with my recent visit to Saravana Bhavan in Malaysia. As someone who craves authentic South Indian snacks, I was excited when I found Mysore Bonda listed on their menu on Google Maps. It’s a rare find in Malaysia, so I made the effort to go there personally just to try it.

But what I received was not Mysore Bonda. Instead, they served me deep-fried balls made from regular vada batter—which is totally different from real Mysore Bonda. For anyone who knows the dish, Mysore Bonda is made with maida (all-purpose flour), not urad dal.

When I politely questioned the staff about it, they simply said, “This is how we make Mysore Bonda here.” That’s misleading. If it’s not authentic, don’t label it as such. To make matters worse, after my complaint, they even changed the item name on the bill from “Mysore Bonda” to “Vada” — trying to quietly cover it up.

As a well-known Indian food chain, I expected better from Saravana Bhavan. Authenticity and honesty matter, especially when you’re representing Indian...

Visited today for dinner and my husband ordered a set of idli, masala dosa and filter coffee. A short height pot-bellied guy came to take our order which my husband repeted twice and after that the same guy came with a cold flat and soggy dosa. After which we immediately called him to ask about the dosa and he said we asked for soft dosa... Like seriously!!! And when we said we didn't ordered any kind of soft dosa, he kind of argued a bit, made face and then murmured something in his language which we don't understand. And this is the 2nd time the same staff showed such kind of behavior. We asked for a regular round crispy masala dosa but I think he just served us a premade dosa because our order was served in no time. You can easily figure out the staff because of his disinterested face. Being a regular customer who visits Sarvana Bhawan at least twice a week it's quite disrespectful today… the staff in this branch is not attentive or may be the good staff went to the pj...

I can't believe how petty and dishonest they are. I have been to this restaurant; the last time was when my son returned from the US. We ordered two meals. When the meals came I complained I hadn't ordered the ones with the chapatis. (My son hates them, and I control how much I eat for lunch.) But we finished our meals anyway. Then today, when I went back, the waiter told me that we had been served the chapattis because we had ordered them. I said I hadn't. Then he said the other guy (my son) did. No, he didn't I replied. He doesn't speak Tamil, besides he hates chapattis. I have been there many times, always ordered the same meal and asked to be served on plate. And they have. Today they flat refused. I walked out. What's wrong with them? Would they prefer to lose a regular customer? And more? I am surely going to relate this story to everyone I meet. They practically called me a liar. Does Saravana want to ruin its...

Friendly staff, very welcoming and helpful. Efficient, polite and clean. Environment: air conditioned, retro design, spacious and clean. Food: Delicious! Served fast, nicely plated and various beautiful condiments given. Especially loved the dhal and tomato chutney! Paper Thosai was crispy and thin, idli was fluffy. Masala tea was the only let down, it wasn’t as fragrant though smooth. Will try brew coffee next time. Overall lovely dining experience, though the price is definitely slightly higher (not over priced still) than usual mamak stalls. However would come back despite its price. Note: it is a vegetarian restaurant, but I would love to try out their curry dishes. Highly recommended!

excellent South Indian vegetarian food with consistently high quality—dishes like masala dosa, thali meals, Gobi 65, and curd vada stand out for their authentic flavors. The restaurant is clean, spacious, and family-friendly, with attentive and courteous service that enhances the dining experience. However, the prices are noticeably higher compared to Saravana Bhavan outlets in other countries like India or Singapore, with a typical meal costing significantly more. While the food and service justify the premium to some extent, diners seeking value might find it on the pricier side.

A great vegetarian place for Indian dishes. Their thosei selections are superb and mouth watering. Had the coriander thosei with the sambar vadai, its oh my god moment. Masala and Madras tea is just nice to finish up your meal. It's fully vegetarian and they've got a whole host of sweets delicacies. Accepts Maybank qr pay and debit/credit. Parking, well, this place is located at Jalan Maarof, so parking is a hell unless your lucky. Otherwise parking further and walking to the place or get a Grab to get here. Love this place. Waiters are polite and prompt.
