I came back for the second time because I had such a pleasant experience the first time I visited. Food was rather good. But after coming back a second time - it made me realize that the food was not as good as before, or nothing special. The service left much to be desired. I enjoyed sitting by the bar, so I opted to sit there again, and the waiter, who was friendly took my order. I ordered a rice bowl dish that could serve 2 pax, to which the waiter said would take 30 minutes. I was fine as there were other dishes to eat while waiting. So the waiter proceeds to insert the order, and went to take an order from the table behind us with a larger party. Sitting at the bar, I could see everything, the order came and the chef took the order - had a look on his face, looked at my direction, looked at the waiter who was busy taking the other tables order, talked to his sous chef who was in front of us, presumably to tell him that they can't serve the 30 minute dish I ordered, walked across the bar, told what I'm assuming is the owner, who then looked at my direction, and looked at the waiter who was taking the order. And waited. By then I already knew what they were going to say. But the boss and the chef waited 10 minutes for the waiter to be done taking the order, before proceeding to tell the waiter that they ran out of the item, for the waiter to then come and tell me about it. It could have just taken 10 seconds for the chef to walk to me to me to tell me about them not being able to do the dish, I was after all, sitting there, looking at them. Nonetheless - the food after that left much to be desired. The beer and the atmosphere was still good though. Not worth another visit.

We had a great izakaya experience last night at Tono Izakaya. It was my first time here. My brother and his family has dined here before. The servers were attentive and we were given suggestions of what is available for the day. They have one regular menu, another one changes daily that is shown on the screen 📺. For the kids we had ebi tempura don and teriyaki chicken don. My son had two servings of ikura chawanmushi. And i must say that was the best ikura chawanmushi ive tasted, purely because its covered full with ikura, not mixed like other places. The corn and crab salad starter were delicious, we ordered 3 plates of it. We had 5 sticks of chicken yakitoris ( the soft bone chicken doesn’t come with a little bit of meat at all, wished it did though like other places). Yakitori was cooked and seasoned well. The seabream was grilled perfectly. But the memorable dish was the unagis. We had one grilled with salt and another one was the unagi sando. The grilled unagi was soft and tender, really tasty. The Unagi sando, the unagi melts in the mouth. I wished we had tasted this earlier and ordered more of it! 😂. We had a mix of everything you could get at an Izakaya. Reminded me of the time I lived in Japan 🇯🇵. I will definitely come again when we return to visit in KL.

Solid 9/10. Went back when they had just opened, so quite a few things ran out when we got there at 9pm for dinner (the only reservation time slot we could get). Last call was at 10pm if I remember correctly. The highlight of the night for me: their unagi sando. The unagi literally melts in your mouth. It’s juicy and so freaking tender. We ended up ordering 4 more dishes of it (1 dish has 2 halves usually, but we requested for them to cut it up in 4 quarters for easier sharing). They ran out of teriyaki don, so there was only the ebi tempura don left at that time. Prawns were fresh and crispy. Not captured: Oden soup was packed with flavour and was nice & hot when it arrived. Although a bit small, more suitable for 1 person instead of sharing. We were told both the chicken wing & thigh yakitori ran out as well when we ordered it. So we settled for the meatball yakitori which was decent. But the manager was a g and managed to get the very last bits of chicken wing yakitori at the end of our meal (was likely a cancelled order) which tasted pretty good. Grilled squid starter with cucumber kimchi was gooood too. Fresh & not chewy at all.

EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING EXPERIENCE. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this was honestly one of the worst restaurants I’ve been to.

  1. Service was slow and staff were inattentive. We waited over an hour for most of our main dishes, and even then, the food was overpriced, bland, and came in tiny portions.

  2. The menu had limited options to begin with, and the fact that many items were already sold out made it even worse.

  3. I ordered the teriyaki chicken with chouchin—only to be served an onsen egg instead without any notice. Still charged RM48 for it, which is ridiculous given the quality and portion.

  4. We also ordered the clam ramen, which was just overly spicy soup with soggy noodles. Even the curry katsu don—something that’s usually simple and hard to mess up, was a letdown.

  5. We ordered the Ko Ebi Karaage and later added another bowl, but both servings were noticeably different in portion size. It felt inconsistent and unprofessional.

  6. To top it off, we requested for the table to be cleaned before bringing out a birthday cake, but staff only cleared the plates and left the table uncleaned. It really felt like they weren’t trained properly.

Would not recommend. Definitely not worth the price,...
