I hardly go to Genting Highlands let alone Gohtong Jaya area, but this area is a magnet for many weekend car convoys which made a pitstop for breakfast after driving up via Batu Caves - Ulu Yam route. Coupled with those coming down from the summit after a night stay or gambling spree, this area could get pretty congested.
Anyway, once in a while I would join my car kaki on a spirited driving up the popular resort. As usual, I just follow them and did nothing as reservations had been already made in advance. It's good to exercise the car once in a while and enjoy the cool breeze during the exhilarating drive less than one hour. This was my first time coming to this restaurant too, as most of the time I'd go to Bukit Tinggi area instead.
Nothing fancy about this restaurant and they still retain those original settings from the early days, with photos of celebrities proudly hanging on the wall. We were treated to a feast... Although all of us went Dutch! ◾Steamed chicken with Bentong ginger - can't complain as I grew up eating Bentong ginger and the dish was as strong (due to the ginger) as I remember it to be. ◾Freshwater prawns in herbal soup - The soup seemed to absorb the sweetness of the prawn roes, making every slurp a bliss. ◾Pai kuat wong - crispy on the outside, soft on the inside.. with a the ribs covered with a layer of sweet sticky sauce. Need I say more? ◾Dry style brinjal - I quite like this interpretation og the dish.. it was garlicky and mildly spicy. ◾Wat Dan Hor - silky smooth Hor Fun doused with the aromatic eggy sauce. ◾Stir fried "tin chat" leaves
All of us were full to the brim at the end of the lunch and we adjourned to Starbucks for another round of coffee while "blowing water" before going back to the Klang Valley in another spirited driving...
Read moreFirst time visiting, one of the long standing restaurants found in Gohtong Jaya that always seems to be packed.
Personally, I found that the shops terrain is quite interesting given one half of the shop is on a lower ground(a few steps down) and the other on the higher ground which makes it quite dangerous if you don't see where your walking so be careful!)
One of their famous dishes is the water egg or 水蛋 and it's delicious! Soft, silky and smooth, it 'melts' in your mouth with eggy goodness! I definitely recommend it every time you come here. However the other dishes are just average such as the fish and tofu.
Now for CNY I would expect higher prices due to the festive season but surprising it's still at a decent price (average Rm150 per meal for 4 dishes) so plus points to the shop owners.
Now usually for these kinds of shops the atmosphere is pretty bad especially when you are sitting near the roadside. However as it is on the mountains the cool air and breeze makes the environment pretty nice especially when you are enjoying a hot meal.
Overall, I can see why it's popular and would come again if the other restaurants are closed.

Read moreSteamed egg and fried French beans was good. However, we had a very bad and dishonest experience on the fish.
We ordered fish and requested for 1kg from elder female waitress. When fish came, very obviously it is not 1kg. We asked the closest waiter to us (elder male waiter) on how much this fish weighed. He said 750g max. We asked to speak to same female waitress and asked her to check. She said this is 1kg. We insisted she go and ask the kitchen. Male waiter approached her as well. But she completely ignored him. When she came back from the kitchen, she said it’s 950g. We said no, this cannot be a 1kg fish. It’s way too small. She said no, it’s not 1kg. It’s 950g. -.- We were very unhappy with this. So we didn’t touch the fish at all and returned to the kitchen. Female waitress said OK and took it away. After that, she came back and tell us that it’s smaller Bcos the “stomach and intestines” all taken out. So it’s smaller.
Lol! What a lie!! We will never come back to this restaurant...
