The only question one would need to ask when rating an eatery is "Would I return?"
For Etre, my answer is "Maybe". Here's why:
Location:1/5 Facing a fairly busy and narrow street, we missed Etre 3x before noticing it. The signage is too small and coupled with its mostly white exterior, it looks like someone's home rather than a pattiserie! It's actually next to an aquarium and water garden establishment which is eye-catching and perhaps distracted us from Etre. Parking was easy on a late weekday morning but the front parking could probably squeeze 4 cars max.
Ambience: 3/5 It's a modestly refurbished bungalow turned patisserie. Loved that they retained the terrazzo tiles. However, there's probably seating for not more than 30 at a time as it's a quaint little place. Interior walls need a coat of paint. Only one table occupied when we arrived. Washrooms were clean and modern. Overall, the place needs more character.
Food: 3/5 Heard that they served the best croissant here. But for us, it was kind of a hit and miss. While the plain butter croissant was hands down the crispiest, flakiest, it disappointed in terms of value - it was practically hollow inside! So, for RM9.50, what we got was a crunchy shell of... air? According to the staff, this is how they serve it. The lack of buttery aroma added to the let down. It was served single and lonely and if you want some butter with it, they charge an extra RM2 (if I remembered correctly).
The Chicken Slice & Cheese Croissant (RM16) was well presented but is the chicken and cheese supposed to be cold and hard? We prefer warm and oozy. The croissant here had the same texture as the plain butter croissant. Slightly salty.
The slice of Burnt Cheese Cake (RM19) was generous and tasty. Wish it was more velvety. But we enjoyed it.
The Raspberry Chocolate Cake (RM22) was thick, heavy, a little sourish and sweet. After finishing half, it got a little too sweet for us.
The iced Houjicha (RM15) had that toasty, well-rounded flavour with just the right balance of sweetness.
Expect to add on 6% SST and 6% service charge.
Service: 5/5 Staff were polite and efficient.
Overall, we kinda enjoyed some of the offerings here. But when charging cosmopolitan prices in Ipoh, we expect value for our money. So, maybe, just maybe we would return to try other pastries... if we can secure an empty...
Read moreI have visited etre since December 2020 from KL, here is my experience since: The place is nice but not convenient (parking difficult and always busy that good for them as it shows that they are succeeding) The cakes/pastries/Salted chocolate cookies are very nice, other baked goods like croissant/pain au chocolat and coffee are average Very pricy for Malaysia and specially Ipoh (unless the owner is paying the staff European salaries then I would say price is correct) My biggest complaint about the place is customer experience though, I visited the place during 3 days this weekend, 1st day went around 4.30 pm, they have already run out of cakes and tarts, it is not a big deal although supply can be improved, went next day then there was a couple waiting for a table, one of the staff came out and then she was saying to both of us the waiting is at least 20 min and we don't have much items left (this was around 11.30 am!!!) then a table was ready in 2 min instead of 20 min, then I asked if i can get a takeaway as I didn't want to wait, the staff asked me to check what they have and order from outside!!!!! Are they serious? then she used her brain to take a picture and show me what is left... I told her it is okay i will come back tomorrow (Monday) and she said sure you can. Went on Monday hahah, then the place is closed :D (Although their Google business account said open on Monday (which was updated a week ago...), there was someone inside who was doing all these weird signs, then he decided to come out to say they are closed, I mentioned that they need to update Google and he said ohh we will be open on Monday starting next week...) So now let me give you some recommendations: It is great to be good at pastries but That is NOT enough, you need to have your customers in mind You have nice space outside, please make it better to have a convenient space for people to wait (maybe invest in fans ... and couple of chairs) To customers please don't settle for poor and pricy experience, you can live without pastries and educate business owners on how to...
