I've been hunting for a place in PJ for good and affordable chicken rice and I think I have found it at Gatherwell.
For just under RM10, you get quite a generous portion of steamed chicken with either steamed rice or butter rice. The presentation looks great as well. Too bad it doesn't come with a bowl of soup as well but you can order it separately for RM5. If you want chicken drumstick you do have to pay a bit more but you can just request for chicken thigh instead without paying more.
Although it is just a normal chicken, the chicken is perfectly poached and retains its juices. The skin is smooth and glistening. Drenched in soya sauce that is not too salty, it ticks most of my boxes for a great plate of Hainanese chicken rice. Each serving is accompanied with minced ginger sauce and chili sauce. The chili sauce is a bit on the watery side though.
The place also serves free range kampung chicken as well but I did not try it. However, it is only sold on its own and not part of a chicken rice set. Bean sprouts side dish is also available as an add-on.
We also tried the curry wantan mee with steamed chicken. The curry broth is flavorful and sufficiently creamy from the santan. The curry and the chicken makes a wonderful combination. Highly recommended.
Last but not least, my two kids went for the fried rice offerings instead. These were not bad but nothing really special though in my opinion.
As for beverages, we normally stick to water but here, it is fairly pricey at RM2 for hot water and another extra 50 sen for the iced version. They do come with a slice of lemon but this is probably one of the most I ever paid for iced water. I wish places don't try to gorge their customers by overcharging for water or force them to pay for pricey mineral water. On the other hand we ordered an iced cham (milk coffee + tea) and that was pretty good.
There is no SST but there is an additional 7%...
Read moreI've been regular 😄. My ultimate favourite is their Hainan Poached chick rice. By far the best i ve had. Love their dumpling soup from the wan tan mee. Portion of dumpling is generous. Cantonese style hor fun not bad. Got abit of 'wok-hey' and seafood they added its very fresh. As for drinks, theres so many choice! Their signature coffee is nice. Service is great and place is clean.
What i didnt enjoy. Perhaps is subjective 🙏 different ppl have different taste. Signature pork noodle soup and their signature curry mee. Most dissapointing is the Crispy pork lard rice w Luncheon meat. Portion is small and the presentation, hmm.. abit of mix feeling. Almost forgot... your Lo Mai Gai 😅 i am surprised, looks almost empty just 2 pieces of chick but maybe it makes sense otherwise wont just called Lo Mai and the Gai. Just that i am used to see LoMaiGai also comes with 1 or 2 slices of chinese sausage and slice of black mushroom. Maybe the difference between a dim sum shop and an ordinary cafe. Well idk. Anyhow lucky it taste okay!.
Anyhow, will still continue to try...
Read moreThis was our first visit to this restaurant. We happened to be in Jaya One running errands and came across this restaurant by chance. It looked clean, bright, spacious and had an extensive menu so we gave it a shot, and were pleasantly surprised. We ordered the Shrimp fried rice which was both simple and delicious. Generous portions for both rice and shrimp ( please maintain this ). We also ordered the Nasi Lemak with lemongrass chicken. Again, a decent portion but what really impressed me was the fact that the chicken was fried on the spot. A bit of a wait but worth it. My only feedback would be that the Nasi lemak could have been platted better. They missed the mark on that. It’s not a big deal if you’re not big on food presentation.
The staff was friendly, attentive and helpful even during the lunch hour crowd. We have yet to try out the rest of the menu, so looking forward to...
