Ordered the Nasi Lemak Campur with Iced Cham and my partner ordered the Hainan Chicken Chop with Iced Kopi. Drinks were actually good, not too sweet like most hawker places that are very sweet, so that's good if you don't like your drinks too sweet/like the stronger coffee taste.

The food for me wasn't the best. The Nasi Lemak Campur came with sambal sotong and rendang chicken. The rendang wasn't as flavourful and was a bit bland, not spicy. The sambal sotong was fine. The nasi lemak itself (just the rice) doesn't taste like nasi lemak. I think there might be a lack of santan or pandan (my partner said he can't really taste it, either). For the chicken chop, though, it was pretty good. So would probably advise to try that.

The reason why the rating is so low is because of the staff treatment. We came during peak time (around 12pm on a public holiday), so it's understood it's packed. However, we were just about finishing up our meal and my partner was left with just his drink. I think there was a regular (or a family member, relative, I honestly don't know and don't care) who kept glaring at our direction, which was quite unpleasant to say the least. She kept glaring at our direction so I just stared back. I overheard something along the lines she wanted our table or because we "looked" like there's nothing left, when my partner still had half of his Iced Kopi that he's drinking. Shortly after the "lady boss" (I would assume) came around our table asking if there's anything left we have before walking away. I assume it's to nudge at us to leave because of that woman.

Overall, because of that treatment and considering the food, will not be returning. The waiter who took our order was nice, though. Everything else, probably won't...

  1. overall - clean and air cond environment, kind and friendly service, value for money, Hainanese cuisine, spacious seating, limited parking, do expect queue during peak hours for Hainan Joy Cafe
  2. hainanese chicken chop was average, value for money as it had plenty of side dishes such as fried egg, chips, baked bean and some salad. Chicken was marinated and fried till crunchy, top with mushroom sauce (could have been more).
  3. Cendol was good with thick gula Melaka flavour, Cendol tasted fresh too
  4. peanut butter toast was really good. The creamy milky salted peanut butter put on top of thick toast. The perfect snack for you in the afternoon
  5. Cham milktea was awesomely good! Very silky feel and smooth
  6. fried mee hoon was okay. It was fried with prawn, chicken breast and fish paste. Not bad but a little too pricy for a plate of fried mee hoon
  7. ice kacang tasted below average. Not much ingredient in it and it didn’t had the wow factor
  8. steam bread with butter and kaya was below average as we were hoping to get the thick toast but it came with the normal off shelf bread which was quite disappointing
  9. dry hailam noodle was below average as it had some weird taste, noodle was not as great too.
  10. curry laksa tasted awesome, guessed they put in lemongrass flower to the laksa, so special and appetising to eat, would be great if they could replace all...

Unlike its look which we thought can “dim soong” or select dishes, its actually ala carte place. We tasted the hainanese chicken rice (3 rice ball = 1 bowl) and we agreed that outside cha satt chicken rice is better. The rice tasted just like normal white rice and the chicken is quite tasteless as well. At least we ordered the beansprouts which had some taste 🤣 we oso sampled some of its cakes, not bad but a bit on the dry side for my taste. We had cendol too which at least i can give some good marks. The drinks are ok as like other cha satts. There are many choices from curry mee, nasi lemak, chicken chop etc you van try as well. The place is well patronised even though its a bit off the peak lunch hour crowd, must say something about its customers and its food. Basically its more of a family oriented restaurant. Pricing isnt expensive as even after sharing out the costs it doesnt leave too much of a dent in your wallet. 🤣 Parking is tough so better bet is put your 🚘 in the nearby mall or unless you are the super lucky ones who always have cars leaving at...

Visited this cafe many times, environment is clean but shows signs of aging with comfortable air conditioning. Impressive are the f&b here. Had a Hainanese toast, soft boiled egg and a Hainan ice coffee for a tea break here and everything taste great. Price is still affordable for such quality level. 7 new Thong sui and gui ling gao is being added to the food menu which I will be trying on my next visit. On another visit, I tasted Hainanese chicken chop & Nyonya curry laksa, both are quite good. Chicken chop is smaller in portion and slightly lacking in tenderness but still ok while the curry laksa lacks some authentic characteristics. Hainan coffee still never let me down and it's an all time specialty here. Generally, it's still a well-performed and maintained cafe in terms of food quality and service.
