I was quite hesitant to patron this store given the many negative comments dished out in google review. I am guessing the bad review was due to the long wait time under the hot sun and the flavor is not as rich as our local kuihs which are stronger in sugar and coconut content. Try go during low peak hours then you might be happier. I have 10 customers in front of me at 11am , wait time was around 15mins for reference
But today i decided to buy quite a few of varieties of it and share with family. I can say it was a great experience. Please remember they were in Michelin Guide and was operating in HK since 1965, do not compare with local dessert/Kuih as we use very different ingredient here. In short, we never complain about the price difference between brands like Proton/Perodua against BMW/Mercedes, they are different categories.
Service and Atmosphere is quite good, its clean. Perhaps they can consider opening up 2 cashier lanes to boost the efficiency instead of 1. I like the fact we can try all samples at the counter area.
Taste wise White sugar Sponge Cake 9/10 - Very nice. Not too sweet and good fragrance. Texture is bouncy and light. Must try. A lady came back few times ordered 3 of these just in front of me at the line.
White sugar Rice Bowl Cake - This i might give it a 5/10. Could have abit more sweetness and softer texture. I find its quite firm and red bean kind of bland.
Steam Red Date Cake 7/10 - Nice 3 layer combination. Brown sugar, Rice and Red Date layer. Do take time to savor the flavor, i find it slightly bland.
Water Chestnut Cake - 8/10 - Not too sweet. Its like the solid version of the Tong Sui we use to drink. Nice fragrance and texture. Not heavy after consuming.
Mango Sago Pomelo Sticky Rice Roll - 8/10. This dish cause a debate among family members, we thought they stuff Sweet Potato as filling but it really take effort of the tongue to distinguish the 3 perfect mix ingredient within.
Peanut Sticky Rice Roll - 9/10. They use very good quality peanuts making it.
Steamed Black Sesame Layer Cake - 9/10. Very rich Black Sesame content, you know its very concentrated and they didnt spare in ingredients.
Steam Almond Cake - 8/10. Very decent, soft, spongy Almond cake. Worth tasting.
Verdict, its worth coming back to get some of the great ones again. Healthier option, Less sugar, less heavy...
Read moreRight. The good bits. Environment is clean and tidy. There are free samples for customers to try before purchase. And that's about it, the end of the good part.
The not-so-good bits. When we arrived in the afternoon, there was nobody in the store and we were the first customers. It was our first visit and we were all fired up for a big purchase since we love these types of delicacies. However, after trying all the free samples there, we were left disappointed as all the cakes were below average with very bland taste. We found the Pandan layered cake to be the best out of the lot, but that too is not a 10/10, perhaps 7.5/10. We bought 2 pieces of pandan layered cake, a peanut roll and a mango roll where free samples were not available for testing. The mango roll was a 4/10 to us, peanut roll is better, 5/10.
We really wanted to purchase a lot of stuff in this store but left with just a little. We also purchased a box of almond cookies priced at RM29.90 a box. We were told that these cookies were made daily and the expiry is 2 weeks. The almond cookies were ok though, rather tasty and fresh with no weird taste. However, the price is a little high but that was expected. RM1 for one piece of small cookie. Back in the day, these almond cookies were made and sold at cheap prices, but these small outfits are now close to extinct so they are now made and sold at premium prices.
It's our 1st visit and also our last visit. We really wanted to like the delicacies, but that's not happening, unfortunately. The taste and quality of the cakes on offer are average at best, mostly below average. It's overrated...
Read moreThis Hong Kong dessert shop famous in Sham Sui Po district lands in KL, and in SS2 of all places. Being in the Michelin guide, it generally invokes curiosity and interest in just how good it is.
I've waited a while to let the initial hype and rush die down before finally dropping by during a weekday afternoon. The "wife biscuit" was sold out, but the steamed desserts were still available.
A simple store, very green I must say. No in house dining as there were no tables or chairs. Everything was take away. The walls are decorated with boxes of their famous "wife biscuit" and also the almond biscuits. The other side are the accolades they received from Michelin.
The food offerings were, a little disappointing. While I was there, their famous red bean steamed cakes were available, and were alright, but the others were just so-so for me. I had the coconut milk steamed cake, coconut milk pandan cake and also another one which was a combination of the two. Also bought a box of the almond biscuits.
Hey, it's in the Michelin (no star) guide, so prices are pretty pricey. RM6.90 for a fairly small piece of the cake was a little much, but to pay almost RM30 for a box of the almond biscuits was pushing it too far.
We are too spoilt for choice when it comes to dessert treats like these, as we have our nonya kuih which go for much cheaper, and probably are stronger in taste as coconut milk is common. And this results in a lot of disappointed customers, as evidenced by the reviews here.
I can only say this - give it a try if you must. If you don't, you're not really missing...
