Fri 24 Nov 2023 I had a wonderful time at New Capital Restaurant with my old classmates from the SHS Class of 1973. We celebrated our 50th anniversary welcome dinner there last evening and it was a memorable experience. The restaurant is located in the heart of Sibu, opposite the Premier Hotel and behind the Tanahmas Hotel. It has a nostalgic ambience with the tiles, the ceiling, and the setting that reminds me of my childhood days. The food was delicious and authentic, with a variety of dishes to choose from. We ordered and enjoyed a nine-course feast. Some of their signature dishes, such as the Hainanese Chicken, Roast Pork Belly and Famous Shao Mai. The portions were generous and the prices were reasonable. The service was friendly and attentive, and the staff helped us to arrange the tables and chairs in the banquet room according to our needs. We had a great time catching up with each other, sharing stories and laughter, and reminiscing about our school days. It was a fun and nostalgic night that we will cherish for a long time. I highly recommend New Capital Restaurant to anyone who is looking for a place to enjoy good food and good company in Sibu. It is a restaurant that belongs to the Sibu people and their old-fashioned taste. Thank you, New Capital Restaurant, for making our 50th-anniversary welcome dinner a success!

I really like the baby kailan here, the way it's stir-fried with mushrooms and the sauce, it's more savory than the usual garlic stir-fry. The Hainanese steamed chicken wasn't served hot (maybe that's how it should be served though I would personally prefer it warm or hot). The chicken rice was good. For the chess duck, you can taste real duck meat (not blended meat ball kind) and vegetables plus mushroom with each bite. It comes with sweet sauce. But take note that it would take a while to prepare aa it requires defrosting. The tomato-sauced kueh teow was good too, thick and the sour level was just right. For the mango glutinous rice dessert, on the English menu it wrote mango mousse, so I was a little disappointed when I found it to be just mango flesh wrapped in glutinous rice flour dough. But the mango is sweet. The panna cotta was thick, creamy and good.

This is such a renowned old Chinese restaurant in Sibu and well loved by the locals. The chicken rice here is absolutely fabulous and exquisite. And the rest of the dishes on their menu are always solidly and lusciously executed and presented. The dining experience here is enriched by the genuine atmosphere of their original 70s or 80s Chinese restaurant deco in shades of pink, and the complimenting lights, furnishings and fit outs. Their food is that good and their main focus, that they never bother to upgrade their interiors which over the years has become an enhancement, because they have maintained it well and clean. Interestingly, this is such a difference compared to the proliferation of retro fit out cafes that attempt to mimic the nostalgia of old eateries locally.

Very deceiving and totally unhappy with how the managed booking. Called to book for dinner for 17/Sep, was told full house. Asked for lunch and was informed that they only serve set lunch of RM350 onwards. Arrived at 11am and was shown our reserved table. Attendants placed menu on our table and did enquiry with regards to our set lunch and was informed that we can order ala carte. When we wanted to order, was told we had ordered set lunch of RM350. While eating, we noticed other diners coming in and was placing ala carte orders and we went wth! Thought lunch was all set menus when we made earlier bookings, no? The food was not worth RM350 with the worst siew mai we ever had in our lives. We went to this restaurant after reading the many reviews and referred to by friend. For us, it's not...
