Mixed Feelings About the Mixed Rice Stall at MABO Restaurant
Let me tell you about my recent trip to the mixed rice stall inside 孖宝 (MABO) Restaurant.
First off, MABO Restaurant itself is fantastic! They've got tons of amazing food like their pork soup noodles, char kuey teow, fish head meehoon, and nasi lemak – seriously good stuff.
But the mixed rice stall? That's a whole different story.
My first time eating mixed rice there, I was pretty happy. I got three dishes (two meats and some tofu) for just RM9. I thought, "Great! I've found my new go-to spot."
Boy, was I wrong. The very next time, for pretty much the same amount of food, I was charged a whopping RM20! Seriously, RM20 for a single plate of mixed rice? That's double what other stalls in the same place charge (they're usually around RM9-RM10). It made me wonder if inflation really hit that hard, or if I just got ripped off.
And it's not just the crazy prices. The lady running the stall seems more interested in her phone than in keeping her food safe. I saw flies buzzing around the dishes, and she just didn't bother to cover them up. It makes you wonder if she even cares about keeping her place clean.
She also comes across as pretty cold, like she only cares about getting your money.
Now, to be fair, the food itself actually tastes pretty good. I've tried their sweet and sour pork (古佬肉), curry chicken, tofu, and black peppered pork, and they were all quite decent.
That's what makes it so frustrating – good food, but everything else about the experience is just not right.
Honestly, because of the wild pricing and the lack of hygiene, I'm just going to skip this mixed rice stall from now on. They can keep their RM20, and I'll find somewhere more consistent and trustworthy to eat mixed rice.
It's a real shame, because with a better cashier and more consistent pricing, this stall could...
Read moreFinally got the opportunity to try this much talked about fish ball noodle. They open early in the morning at 6:30am according to their Facebook page. But once I came & by 11:30am they were sold out so try to come early. Order the soup based noodle and it came with a generous amount of fishballs, a piece fuchuk and a piece fish cake; added with chopped spring onions and crispy pork lard (Chu Yau Char/ 猪油渣) To my surprise the fishballs were abit soft (borderline mushy) unlike the usual springy/ bouncy fishballs we are used to eating. Was a tad disappointed with the texture. To me the standout in the dish was the fish cake. It tasted yummy and springy. The soup base was fresh with not too overly salty & it was good. Each bowl of noodle comes with chopped red cili padi and a homemade chili dipping sauce according to the staff. The latter was my favourite. You have a choice to add on minced pork for an additional ringgit and you can choose your noodles to come in a small and large bowl. Worth a try. PS: I did not feel thirsty as the day went by...
Read moreWe had dinner here recently, and while the food itself was good and the service staff were polite, the overall experience was disappointing.
We were given a very small table that clearly couldn’t fit all our dishes. The supervisor was aware of the situation but simply told us we had no choice because the restaurant was busy and they didn’t want to give us a larger table. That kind of dismissive attitude felt unnecessary and unhelpful. A little effort to accommodate guests would go a long way.
The atmosphere was also uncomfortable. The air-conditioning and fans were blasting, and the music was extremely loud, making it hard to enjoy the meal.
We waited over 30 minutes for our food with no apology, no explanation, and no updates, just a casual “it’s coming” when we asked. For a place that clearly tries to offer good food, the lack of communication and care was disappointing.
The food and most of the staff were great, but the attitude from the supervisor and the lack of basic courtesy really brought the whole...
