TBX – The Baking Xperiment is the kind of café that welcomes you with a smile – quite literally. One of the highlights of my visit was the cheerful greeting from the café attendant, complete with a “Good morning!” and a genuine smile. In today’s café scene, that kind of customer service feels almost vintage – and very much appreciated.

The croissant? Delightful. Fluffy, buttery, and just the right kind of flaky. Though I didn’t sample the full menu, it’s clear the food is made with care. The coffee was also spot on – rich, smooth, and exactly what you want to pair with a good pastry. Add to that easy parking and access, and you've got the makings of a great café experience… almost.

Where it falters slightly is in the ambience and pricing. The furniture feels more pre-school chic than café comfort – mismatched and a bit too casual for a place that’s aiming for artisanal vibes. Not a dealbreaker, but definitely something that breaks the mood a little.

Then there’s the pricing: RM25 for an Americano with butter on the side is a bit steep, even in the café-saturated world of Subang. While quality comes at a cost, the price-to-value ratio could use a little recalibration. A review of menu costing could go a long way in ensuring long-term growth (and happy customers).

One more niggle – payment methods. For a café charging premium prices, not accepting card payments (debit or credit) feels a bit out of step. The current setup only allows cash or QR-based e-wallets, and while digital payment is great, not everyone walks around with hundreds loaded in their app. A café with big ambitions should make it easier for customers to, well, pay.

TBX has all the ingredients to be a fantastic neighbourhood spot – great food, good coffee, and lovely service. A few tweaks to the furniture, pricing strategy, and payment options, and this café could truly rise to the top. Until then, it’s a pleasant stop – with...

✓ Tips/Observation: (Sunday visit) •Alot of parking •Friendly staff, very accomodating (even help checking for unavailable pastry at the back (kitchen). •Chill ambience •Coffee is not warm enough especially when served in a non-glass cup. •Freeflow of plain water, cutleries and tissue are next to the counter.

✓ Food: •Plain Croissant | 4.1/5 -Technique is good. Flaky (closest to what i prefer in paris, maybe missing another 2 fold. -Buttery (prefer bit more, im being nit picky). -Sprinkle of flake salt a welcome touch

•Pain au chocolat | 3.8/5 -Flaky texture. I like the slight crispier outer shell (even scored and brushed nicely). ∆Chocolate Filling 2.5/5 -texture is off. Too wet, soggied-up the pastry. Not the cholatey feeling i expected. More sweet than chocolatey. **Update : bought again today. Filling texture is better today. 3.3/5.

•Cheese and Turkey Ham Croissant | 3/5 -pastry is the same as croissant -Not too cheesy. -Meat is ok.

•Monkey bread | 3/5 -pastry is ok. -a touch too cinnamony -the melted sugar at the bottom (from baking or reheating is too hard).

•Pain au raisin | 3.5/5 -balance taste. Tasty. -Enough raisins

•Chocolate chip cookie | 2/5 -Texture is too hard. -should be softer for such a thick. -Quality ingredients

•Musroom pillow | 3/5 -Not bad. Not balance ie the mushroom and acid component (the cherry tomatoes). -theres cheese too ccmiiw.

✓ Drink: • Flat white 3.1/5 -Milk froth well. Latte art on mine is ok. -I dont like the bean used during my visit. -Coffee not warm enough. I guess its on purpose but it will affect the overall taste.

•Latte | 3/5 -Terrible late art on this. Need to study more. If its a swan, it look like pot of flower. -Taste wise same as flatwhite. The coffee so-so and the tempreture is too 'cool'.

Will come again for other pastries. Will skip the coffee tho unless i can request for a hotter/watter...

Hehe I managed to try @thebakingxperiment (no pork) new menu spread and the viral crack drink 👀 and visit their upstairs expansion!

Lets get into the food:

I’m a savoury girl and the cronigiris (RM13 per piece) was savoury, buttery and the fillings were on point. Pastry wasn’t as flakey as I imagined but it was still a good bite.

The flavours includes:

Truffle Egg Mayo - Milder than the rest, can’t go wrong with boujee egg mayo. Spicy Tuna - there is a kick! Salmon Mentaiko - very flavourful, towards the saltier and more umami side.

The Kunafa Croissant (RM18) really highlighted the texture profile of the kunafa — it is crispy, gooey, with a prominent dark chocolate flavour. Not too sweet 🌈

The crack drinks? I guess it’s fun to crack em and eat the chocolate at the end of the drink; no, the chocolate doesn’t dissolve in the drink (because the drink is cold, hello).

The drink itself now includes a few new flavours:

NEW: Mint Chocolate (RM18) - 💯 love this. It’s like eating mint flavoured ice cream, but with more focus on the creamy mint. The chocolate is a dark chocolate coat.

NEW: Thai Tea (RM18) - Pretty good and balanced. The chocolate is a dark chocolate coat.

Matcha (RM18) - I’ve always been a fan of their matcha, well balanced and easy to drink. The chocolate is a white chocolate coat.

I was hoping to try more flavours but oh well.

The shop were featured in one of the social media platform that promoted food and since then, the customers that came to look for the cromboloni have increased tremendously. The cromboloni was delicious with generous filling. Sadly, that’s the only good experience I have. They only started to sell the cromboloni at 12pm and for every batch, there were only 10pcs! Customers need to wait for 30 minutes for the next batch. And every batch only have one flavour. They couldn’t provide a definite answer when I asked what was the flavour for the next batch. It’s literally a waiting game. When you want to be featured in social media platform means you wanted to attract more customers. Which means you also need to get ready and plan well. 10 pieces for every batch when you could see the queue outside of your shop? Just doesn’t make sense to me. Besides the cromboloni, I also purchased the peperoni pizza croissant. I wouldn’t repeat the purchase. Overall prices are too expensive. Perhaps to compensate for their inovative pastry. I applaud them for their creativity but I won’t return until there is something worth to try. I would also suggest for the workers to be more friendly (smile more) especially the male staff (may be the owner from the way you have been giving directions to the other staff). The environment is beautiful and very instagramable spot. Suit the young people that wanted to hangout. The parking quite difficult especially during weekend and lunch time, so please choose timing wisely.

Came here specifically to try the rosti (since I had a craving for it), and it delivered excellently! The eggs were the right side of soft, and the potatoes were flavorful and tender without being mashy. The carbonara was quite different from what one would expect of a typical carbonara, but I really like how well the sauce adhered to the pasta, and the savoriness of the dish was strong. Portion-wise, the rosti is grouped under 'light brunch' while the pasta is a main; both dishes definitely were accurate to their portion sizes. The houjicha latte had a lovely roasted-earthy taste that's the hallmark of good hojicha. However, the portion for this felt a little too small, given the price. Likewise, the yuzu lemon soda my friend ordered was also surprisingly small. Space-wise, this cafe is fairly compact and has an upper seating area that can host larger groups (this area is closed off by 5pm though). While there are some wobbly tables, the deco evokes a fairly cosy cafe feel with natural lighting. The prices here might be a little on the high side for drinks, but are pretty standard for cafe fare - for the food, the portion sizes make the prices worth it, and would definitely drop by again for the rosti
