Strada Merkanti Cafe & Bistro — Restaurant in Valletta

We came in here desperately looking for a cool drink after walking around Valetta in the midday heat. It’s not got a good vibe- loud music playing from a TV and no sort of decor.. Uncomfortable seating and only one guy working, who seemed overwhelmed, hot and bothered. We had our drinks but then it took ages to pay because this poor guy was trying to cook the entire order of another table… I felt really bad for him and wasn’t sure if he was the owner of the place or just worked there? Anyways, I wasn’t impressed- from a customer service point of view you should not just have one person working all the roles in a cafe. At least have someone to tend to customers while the other cooks. The kitchen/bar area looked wildly disorganized, with stuff piled all over the place. We got out of there asap and I would NOT have wanted to eat there. I think there are much nicer places for a drink and a snack in Valetta… give...

We were looking for a quick bite of food and came across this snack bar.

The inside looks newly renovated and the tables and chairs were also new.

We ordered a Maltese platter and when it came we were surprised how filling it was for two people.

The two cheeses were delicious. The bigilla was tasty as were the big butter beans. The bread here is very tasty.

Very disappointing. The staff member was extremely rude – when I asked for an iced coffee, he refused to make it and gave me a condescending look. He then told me he’d just give me coffee and ice separately, as if it was too much trouble to prepare it properly.
