Sitar Bagatelle – When Disappointment Becomes the Main Course
I’ve dined at Sitar Bagatelle multiple times, and sadly, each visit after 2023 has only gone downhill. What was once a decent place with manageable service has now turned into a frustrating and poorly managed experience that I cannot recommend to anyone.
2023: Service was average. A 3.5/5 experience — long wait times, but the staff was at least trying. 2024 & 2025: Complete disaster. And I truly mean it — this was the last time I’ll ever dine there.
What went wrong? • 30-minute wait before someone even noticed us. • Only one or two servers working the entire floor, rushing between tables, barely listening, and speaking so quickly and unclearly that I had to ask them to repeat themselves multiple times just to understand basic things. • Tables were not properly set — no cutlery, no napkins. We had to request even the most basic things like spoons and forks. • Entrée was forgotten — something that should be served first, and warmly. Instead, we had to ask for it ourselves. • Food took 35 minutes, and drinks another 20 — and we’re talking about boxed juice, not even freshly made. • When our order didn’t make sense, the staff gave no guidance, no suggestions, no help — just took the order and vanished. • Menu is unclear, no photos, and no proper description of the dishes. If you’re not familiar with Indian food, you’re completely on your own.
And the worst part? For all this inconvenience, the bill was high, but the experience felt cheap and neglected.
This is not just about food. This is about respect, service, and hospitality — all of which are missing at Sitar Bagatelle.
If you’re Indian, local or a tourist hoping for a pleasant Indian meal — do yourself a favor and avoid this place. There are far better restaurants in Mauritius that offer true Indian hospitality, clearer communication, better variety, and a professional...
Read moreI invited 4 friends from Australia to join my wife and me for lunch there on 21 August 2018. I called to book a table for 12:00. I was asked to come at 12:30. I thought that the restaurant was all booked. I asked to be seated on the main ground floor. I was told that for lunch they only use the ground floor. I did not bother to enquire in details. When i got there I was surprised to see that I was the first customer. We ordered our drinks and appetisers. When most of us wanted to have lamb for the main course we were told that they were out of stock. I was not all happy about that and I was told that they had a function a day before and so they had no lamb left. This is very unprofessional. Its was too late for us to leave and go somewhere else and so we have had to bear with them. I noted that some of us did not have knives and so I decided to take the knives from the tables near us. When the appetisers were served we wanted to share among us. We asked for plates. There was no response and so we decided to use our side plates as otherwise the food will be cold if we were to keep on waiting. When the main course was served we asked to remove the side plates and to give us both proper plates and side plates. We were given the main plates only. As we had ordered Naan we have had to stick our Naan on the side of our plate. I was overall not very happy with the service and lack of items that were on the menu. I shall not...
Read moreHad dinner with family one Saturday.
The food was good except for the okra (bhindi), which was too ripe, too ripe. The chef should pay more attention to what kind of products are being bought.
The service was ok. Servers with black outfits only speak English and seem to be well trained. Those with red outfits looked like they needed a but more training.
The atmosphere overall looks old and needs a refreshing makeover. There was live singing with music which, according to me, was too loud. I could not talk to my family members without yelling out my words. I believe that for a restaurant, it is important that customers are able to talk to each other in a peaceful and less noisy atmosphere. Tables are too close to each other, which inevitably results in frequent bumps while trying to move around. The toilet male side is messy, and I believe no cleaning is done before the end of the dinner service. The hand dryer is hanging loose from the wall, and tissue paper is given to wipe your hands dry after washing. The dustbins are full of tissue paper from the use of many many many previous customers. Toilets should really include an air freshener.
For the price of their menu, I believe some more efforts could be put into making customers feel more comfortable.
Overall, a 3 for Sitar Bagatelle. I am not going...
