Absolutely loved this place. My wife and I were walking through Cancun on our way to where all the bars are located from Dream Sands and noticed two restaurants in a strip mall. We were walking towards one when a very nice, older, and extremely entertaining and animated gentleman caught our attention with his voice.
This is when we meet, Felipe, and are we glad we did! Felipe was a super sweet older man with more energy than we knew what to do with. Upon sitting down, we were greeted with a warm welcome, a large basket of chips and some amazing pico and salsas! We ordered two beers and he made a few recommendations and we decided to take his word. When the beers were delivered, they came with two shots of tequila. To our surprise, Filipe had bought us a round of shots for joining him in his place.
I had tacos Pollo and tacos Cameron. Both orders were on corn tortillas and man were the tortillas good. Both the Pollo and Camaron were done perfectly!
I cant remember exactly what my wife ordered but I do remember the portion size was more than enough, she didn't finish, and that she said it was really good. At the end, we asked for our bill and to our surprise it was more than reasonable, I mean if we were in the U.S. it probably would have cost us double, and being in the Hotel Zone, we also expected to pay more than what we were charged
Honestly, I don't know if we would have went to this place if it hadn't been for Filipes charm and amazing personality, but in the end we ended up at Calypso's and when in Cancun again, we will be stopping by for more food and fun. Definitely worth the stop if you want some quality food at...
Read moreGreat food, prices and service! It seems they don't get much business because Taco Rigo takes up so much space. My friend and I meant to come here and accidentally sat down at the red tables for Taco Rigo then realized we were at the wrong spot, so we went back the next day to try Calypso's and it didn't disappoint! The vibe is great and you can tell it's just a mom and pop shop doing their best. The only negative thing I can say is that the night we went they happened to have a live guitarist singer (white woman) singing a bunch of Margarita-ville type songs that threw off the authentic vibe. Would have much preferred a mariachi band or local Mexican singing for tips. The live music was also too loud to hear each other talk. This was a Monday so I assume they were just trying to attract people into the little plaza they are in. Overall great experience aside from the cheesy...
Read moreWHERE CAN I GET THE BEST MARGARITA IN CANCUN? Here it is... Great Mexican bar/restaurant also serving the best genuine Margaritas made by Felipe himself. Felipe is always full of smiles, great guy. You have to go there!!!
It's not far from Coco Bongo.
A little known secret. How come Calypso's prices are more competitive compared to other restaurants in the area? Because Calypso don't pay 100 peso per person commission to hotels and resorts when they refer you.
Perhaps that is also why you find many local or annually returning gringos and "gringorinas" here in the afternoons.
So now you know the rest of the story!
UPDATE Felipe, I am still alive!!! Thanks to the vitamins in your Margaritas. Sorry I could not come and see you...
