I honestly don’t understand all the hype about this place. To sit down here, I had to walk almost 700 meters under the burning sun to the nearest ATM because they only accept cash. Naturally, I had high expectations, but they were not met at all.
First of all, all the bathroom doors were wide open, and the smell constantly reached our table. Second, the food was disappointing. The only thing I really enjoyed was the guacamole. My shrimp dish was bitter, and I barely managed to finish it. There was also some kind of soggy tortilla on my plate, and I had no idea what to do with it — it just stayed untouched. My partner also didn’t like the food much; it was edible, but nothing special.
The worst part was the mosquitoes. In less than half an hour, I was bitten over 30 times — on my legs, arms, and even through my dress. I asked the waitress for a repellent spray, she promised to bring it “in a minute,” but disappeared and only came back when we were already asking for the bill, saying that unfortunately there was no spray. That was really disappointing, because she could have told us right away.
We also had to wait quite a long time for the check, during which I got even more bites. By the end, we were both frustrated and upset.
I cannot recommend this restaurant. The food and the service are definitely not worth the hassle of walking to an ATM to withdraw cash. If you do decide to come, make sure to bring your own repellent — even during the day, there are swarms of mosquitoes that will...
Read moreWe have eaten here three times in six days. The first day we had fried snook, the second fried red snapper, and the third fried grouper. The snook and grouper were our favorite, but the snapper was good as well! Each time we have gotten the mixed ceviche as well. I am truly going to miss this place when we go back home! Each fish we had was deliciously seasoned and perfectly fried, without being greasy and heavy on the stomach. The ceviche was also great each time!
Definitely make sure to put some bug spray on when you come here though. The first time we came my husband and I left with lots of bites! Don’t let this deter you though!
Regarding the price, we think it is very reasonable for what you get. While the service isn’t speedy fast, I think they do the best they can. The place has always been packed, including with lots of big families. The staff are kept very busy! Anytime we needed something, we were easily able to get it. It’s also cash only, which they make very clear on the sign outside.
As for language, we speak no Spanish, and we had zero issues ordering. They have an English and Spanish menu. When we had a question, we just typed it in Google Translate, no issues!
I’ll miss you, El...
Read moreOur server was very attentive and the food fresh and prepared on site family style in an open fire. I highly recommend this location for authentic seaside seafood. We had guacamole, fish tacos, shrimp ceviche, fried fish, shrimp with garlic sauce, fried shrimp, maduro frito and roasted maduro with cheese. Tortillas abound with every dish, some fried with the guacamole and the rest soft. The pique was just the right level of heat for me, and we were served some fresh limes too. The shrimp ceviche was spectacular, and the fried fresh fish was good for two meals. Fish tacos are in a league of their own. They were fried crispy and once they cooled enough to touch them they were extremely flavorful. The shrimp with garlic sauce and the fried shrimp were cooked exactly correctly and were both very flavorful. As a family accustomed to Colombian and Venezuelan fare, we enjoyed the fried and roasted maduro dishes as well. Portions were adequate and prices were economical. Bring pesos though, as they don't take cards and while they do accept US cash, the dollar exchange rate that they give you is rather low. At the moment of this review, you can get about 19.5 pesos per dollar in Cancun, but at the...
