Tacos Fenix is a gem among Ensenada’s street food vendors. This small taco stand, like many here, offers a straightforward yet exceptional experience. When we visited on a quiet Sunday, the stand wasn’t crowded, though I imagine Saturdays might bring more foot traffic.
We ordered shrimp and fish tacos, and one standout aspect was the ability to customize each taco with as many toppings as we wanted—lettuce, lime, onions, and several salsas. The macha salsa, in particular, was impressively spicy, adding a unique kick that’s not common in U.S. taco stands. The flavors of the salsas were bold and layered, enhancing the fresh taste of each taco.
The shrimp tacos were especially delicious, with perfectly cooked shrimp that stood out as my personal favorite. The fish tacos were also excellent; the fish was flavorful without any hint of fishiness, and the breading was light, making the overall taco feel satisfying but not overly heavy.
Though seating is limited to a single table and a few benches around the stand, it’s typical of Ensenada’s street food scene. The staff was friendly and efficient, adding to the charm of the experience. The atmosphere was that of an authentic street vendor—a lively, open-air spot where the focus is all about the food.
Overall, Tacos Fenix offers flavorful, well-crafted tacos that make it worth a return visit, especially for that macha salsa. Would...
Read moreTypical, good Ensenada tacos. Probably better than any fish tacos you’ll find anywhere in the us. Only issue is they’re in Ensenada and competition is on every corner. While I can appreciate them being in business since 1970, they are certainly not the best tacos in Ensenada. Pros: Very interesting and unique red sauce. Breading/tempura is seasoned well, making them stand out a bit from others. They’ve been around for 50 years, so chances you’ll find them there every time you visit are high.
Cons: The tortillas are served cold, that’s right, they didn’t get cold, they are served cold, which makes them fall apart, not very enjoyable when you have to scoop your pico and lettuce with your hands. The cucumber and pico de gallo are chopped very sloppy and into big chunks, hard to keep inside the taco and you end up getting entire bites certain veg. The fish and shrimp are fried and sitting outside so by the time they end up in your taco they’re soggy and lukewarm. The breading is very thick, too thick, kinda reminds me KFC. The truck is park next to a roof, where tens of pigeons are hanging out and with no protection against them, you might end up with some extra sauce in your taco. Seriously, watch out for those bombs.
Overall, I’d cross right across the street to Tacos Corona where everything is...
Read moreWas here on Monday 8/16/21 with Parents sister and cuñado. Had read some reviews and seen some youtuber vids. So very few people. We were lucky to have parked right across the stand. Im sure that on weekends parking ca be a hassle.
Orders are swiftly dispensed. Condiment area gets crowded and can be difficult to access if people don't stay in line.
They use the same batter for both fish and shrimp.
I had 2 fish and 2 shrimp. My first 2 I had with the red and green salsa. Had both types of picked onions and of course cabbage and pico. I only put chipotle mayo on it. Salsas, pico, picked onions are lightly salted. Cabbage has no seasoning.
The last 2, I put all the condiments including the white cream sauce and went for the I believe "tatemada" salsa, of course spicier. Didn't put red or green salsa. (Pictured)
I tried a piece of both fish and shrimp by itself, had a satisfactory taste to it. I really want to say what makes these tacos tasteful are the chipotle and white cream sauce.
What really surprised me was the Check, in all we had 13 tacos and 6 drinks. Shrimp were $25 Pesos, Fish $20. In all we paid $400 even. Equals to $20 US. Next time in the area I'll certainly make a pit stop. Although there's a several other places to try...
