Food was great. I asked the bartender what “well” or “rail” bourbon he used for an old fashioned and told Kirkland Scotch. (I’m like what? ) I ordered an old fashioned with Bullet bourbon and received half a small glass that seemed weak. I would have had two if it was a real drink. Later found out it was the owner running the bar. 😳Who uses scotch for an old fashioned? Stick to the food and wine. You’ll be good👍
Update 3/2 Response to the owners rant below.--- Actually I'm very knowledgeable about bourbon/whiskey and have ordered and made many Old Fashioned. No way there was 2 ounces of whiskey in that glass as stated by the owner. My partner noticed it as well. I didn't finish it as I didn't want to be asked if I wanted another one.
Also there were three of us at the table, when we asked for two separate checks we got one. the waiter told us the system wouldn’t allow it. So two very unique things about Canto. They use scotch (blended scotch!) for old fashioned's (unless you upgrade) and their POS system doesn't allow for separate checks at the same table.
My advice to them, get a bartender and sort the POS system out. My advice to everyone else, it's a good place with good food. And if there is any issue with your drink, even when asked....don't say anything, you'll be told you're rude. After all the owner/bartender makes the best lemon drop EVER!
To be honest, this place has such a small seating area, the profit margins have to be really tight. Exactly why the owner is the bartender. The art and build out are very tasteful. The food and staff are great. The owner having very little customer service skills may alienate the very business that would make him successful. In stead of "how can I make it right?" that would cost penny's and encourage new business, he is defensive and almost hostile. The customer is always right, and if he's wrong he's right. Every successful business owner knows and understand this.
That being said, the place is good. Like the owner said I'm an outlier. If you are looking for something different in PV, this is the place. And I bet if you order an Old Fashioned it is the best you ever had this side of the border! If not... be careful...
Read moreI have been meaning to visit Canto - Modern Cantonese Bistro, Puerto Vallarta since it opened but never got around to it. I'm rather annoyed at myself for not doing sooner now!! Wow... It is 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me and here is why... We didn't have reservations but Jeremy and his staff went out of their way to accommodate the four of us, we only waited mere minutes to be seated even though they were visibly very busy. It is a cosy yet modern restaurant, but was spotlessly clean. I appreciate that. Upon perusing the drinks menu, I decided upon a lychee martini and it didn't disappoint! Comfortingly chilled, not too sweet, just enough alcohol with double, juicy lychees suspended atop. Hmmmmm. Yummy. There isn't a huge menu here which always tells me the quality of the food will be fresh! Of course, I have been hearing all sorts of amazing things on the street about their "world famous" orange chicken so opted for that. I was rather speechless when it came out, not only did it look appetizing, oh boy, the taste of the bite size, super crunchy, double fried chicken breast with the thick, dark, sweet, spicy sauce was out of this world!! Not too spicy, but enough to be packed full of flavour and leave you wanting more and more. Even the plain boiled rice was flavourful, and I'm not quite sure how they pulled that one off! Our table had variety of plates, all of which were tasty, hot and presented beautifully, but it was all agreed that on our hasty return we shall all be ordering the orange chicken. I didn't get round to trying anything else as I was lazer focused on my mouthwatering chicken but looking around, everyone's food looked amazing and the place was packed with happy customers. I cannot wait to get back again to be honest. Reservations highly...
Read moreWhat an amazing night Canto - Modern Cantonese Bistro, Puerto Vallarta. So impressed with the newest restaurant in PV’s Zona Romantica! The gorgeous dining room is flooded by amazing lighting and beautiful art. Even the custom tables show the attention to detail and creates a lovely ambiance. 🖼️
Five of us us had the Canto Cooler, a tropical punch with vodka, coconut rum, mango schnapps, cranberry, and pineapple juices with a kiss of cherry. Reminded me of a Singapore Sling and we had another! We’ll have to try the other cocktails in the future but this one was delicious! 🍹
We all sampled a bit of everything and enjoyed a bit of all the appetizers. The vegetable spring rolls and crab rangoons were my favorite. Both were elevated and the most tasty I’ve ever had. Har Gow shrimp dumplings were bursting with flavor. Siu Mai - the steamed pork and shrimp dumplings were a delicate balance of land and sea. 🥟
For the entrees, I had to have the baked pork chop fried rice. I never knew about this authentic Hong Kong dish featuring a pan fried boneless pork chop on a bed of fried rice, covered in tomato sauce, and finished with baked cheese gratin on top, but it’s my new fav! My second favorite was the double-fried chicken tossed in a sweet and tangy orange sauce. The Canadian Ginger Beef was a highlight as well! 🥢
Finished with a bit of mochi ice cream, delectable cheesecake and key lime pie. The cheesecake wins the dessert category for...
