Based on great reviews, my husband and I went to Melissa's for dinner. It was a huge disappointment 😞 I ordered tortilla soup, and my husband chicken fajitas. They brought totopos (Mexican chips) with a vile dip of mayo, carrots & cucumber, and another awful incredibly salty sauce that tasted of soya sauce. I grew up in Mexico and we visit PV multiple times a year, and I have never not been served a Mexican salsa with chips. The service was slow; I felt the servers there catered to American/Canadian regulars who were drinking quite a bit ( we don't drink). My soup was the worst I've ever had. The broth had no flavor; tasted like warm tomato water despite me dousing it in lime, salt, & Tabasco in a desperate attempt to infuse it with some flavor. My husband had chicken fajitas. They were ok but cold and again, no seasoning or flavor at all. We asked for salsa; they brought us a small bowl of tomato, onion & cilantro (no jalapeño) and charged us 45 pesos. Truly the worst food experience we have had in downtown Vallarta 👎

A search for a seafood close to where we were staying in El Centro led us to Melissa’s. What a treasure! It’s a bright, clean, welcoming family run business with a casual vibe and peasant music. The diners around us where relaxed, happy and enjoying a positive experience. The well-prepared mahi-mahi and mixed seafood dinners were nicely presented. We loved that the meals came with rice and fresh veggies rather than fries. We chatted with Melissa and we were served by her son’s girlfriend Diana. The complimentary after dinner kahlua and cream or tequila is a bonus. We enjoyed the meal so much we returned the following week, ordered the same dinner and it was just as good! Our best wishes to Melissa and her business which is expanding to create terrace dining upstairs.

Wow, what a serendipitous fine!! We were walking on the Malecón contemplating dinner when I googled map searched for Mahi-mahi and Melissa ‘s came up. Hubby had the Mahi with mango sauce and I had the 3 season shrimp and both were fantastic. The mango sauce is slightly creamy and the mango soft and it add such a nice tang to the fish. The Diabla sauce is one of the sauces on the shrimp was it just the right taste of sweet and tangy. Mmmm, delicious. The service was fantastic and I had a tamarind margaritas that they make with their own house brand tequila, tasty and strong!!! They also had a roaming guitarist who was playing for a few pesos per song. No pressure to to pay, and very entertaining. All and all a great night and definitely will be back.

There is nothing worse than ordering and being told 15 minutes later they don't have the item. OK, disappointing but not the end of the world. Should have just finished the guacamole and left because what came next was bad. Decided to try the 'Charro' shrimp since they did not have my original order. What a way to waste $480 pesos. They tasted like someone scraped a charcoal grill and then covered our meal with the dust, foul tasting and had the texture of grit. The best part is I had one bite and the waitress came over and said to me 'Yeah, they are not for everyone'. No kidding. At this point I did not have the patience to try a 3rd time and just wanted to leave. I also had a feeling that if we did try something else we were getting charged for what we were sending back and I was correct. Save yourself the disappointment and do not order this. And to the ownership; willing to come tell us we couldn't have what we ordered but they were ghosts when they saw us not eating our meal and clearly unhappy. How strange and embarrassing. $650 pesos for chips, salsa, Guacamole and one drink.

House salsa - very good Guacamole - great Margarita - great Charro...

This is our first time in PV. My husband and I wanted to get away from the main strip for something quaint and were enticed by the rooftop and proximity to our rental. However, we nearly left when we were brought chips with "thousand island dressing," some kind of soy sauce mixture, and what we think were key limes.

My husband ordered shrimp fajitas and I got the "spicey" Mahi Mahi plate. The fish was smothered in sauce that was actualy kind of sweet and the veggies were way over-steamed. The small amount of rice on the plate was the only saving grace. My husband's dish was only a bit better. We left with much of the food still on our plates (I ate about 1/4 of the Mahi and maybe half the veg).

The staff was nice, but not very attentive. They did offer a free shot, but we were not interested. The rooftop was nice and we could see the brief fireworks show from the pirate ship. Otherwise, the atmosphere was nothing special, though it seemed like a nice family business.

I am very surprised about the other reviews and high rating. I don't know if something has changed recently or perhaps the breakfast is...
