Tucked inside a busy shopping/street market, in the same area as the Frida Kahlo museum, is one of the best, most deliciously authentic Mexican food restaurants on the planet! As you can see from the photos they had an eclectic mix of blue corn delicacies that are unique and extremely flavorful. It was a great deal of fun to sit at the counter and watch them prepare our food. The rapid fire pace in which they created each dish was a joy to behold. The atmosphere of the market was boisterous and reminded us of the seafood markets in Seattle. Along with our tostados and blue corn tacos. The freshly prepared guac and chips was delicately seasoned, thick and filling. It was so good that we were scraping the side of the bowl with our spoon and then sheepishly looking around, using our fingers. It was that good! The blue corn tortillas were very interesting and had a richer taste than more traditional white flower or regular corn tortillas. Their horchata had a subtle flavor but without as much cinnamon as at other places. It was amazing! The staff was a lot of fun, and very kind as we struggled to order in a combination of Spanish and English. As with nearly every place we visited on this adventure, there were one or two staff members who spoke English. Our tour group absolutely loved this place. & highly, highly...
Read moreVegetarians and vegans, look no further! This is the one place in Mexico City I found which not pure vegan or vegetarian that told us as we walked by, “we can make everything on our menu vegetarian.” Thank you for being inclusive and remembering that vegetables, when given the same love and treatment as meats with time, seasoning, and marination, can be absolutely fantastic. We had the sopes, burrito, enchiladas, and huarache, all vegan. Enchiladas were our favorite. General bowls of salsa (not the stingy, two spoons and it’s gone type you find in vegetarian restaurants here), the main server spoke excellent English, and the market is a fun vibe. Decent prices, good portions. 10/10...
Read moreI had a very enjoyable meal here while visiting the mercado. It was pretty busy when I arrived (always a good sign) but I was able to get a seat at the counter. I had a "pre-hispanic" taco of hormigas chicatanas (leaf-cutter ants), huitlacoche (a corn fungus) and squash blossoms. It was very delicious, served on one of their signature blue corn tortillas with a spread of guacamole. I also had a small bowl of the pork pozole rojo. It had a nice, gentle spiciness and was loaded with corn, meat and cabbage. It was served with a small stack of tostada's, which I broke up and added to my bowl. I would definitely recommend the restaurant and look forward to eating...
