My teenage daughter and I booked a 3-hour private cooking class here, at the recommendation of our tour guide. Of all the amazing things we did on our vacation to Mexico City, this was definitely a top highlight. I've had a longtime interest in cooking with fresh ingredients, and in Mexican culture and food, and I speak Spanish well enough for traveling experiences. My daughter has a newer interest in cooking and speaks no Spanish. The way the class was structured allowed both of us to be engaged and learn so much. Both of the chefs who guided us were clearly accomplished and worked well together as a team. The main chef and owner of the café, Luis Alfonso Garduño, had a rather serious approach to teaching the cooking techniques (only in Spanish) and educating us about Mexican culture. His teaching partner, Ricardo Bonilla, translated everything into English and had a more personal and friendly style. Working with both chefs allowed a complete experience where we felt at ease, improved our cooking skills, and made amazing food. The menu was mostly set by Chef Garduño, but we made arroz con leche for dessert at our request because it's my daughter's favorite. They did require us to transfer the entire fee in order to book the class, but I can understand why. The menu required many fresh ingredients (especially for the mole) and everything was completely prepared when we arrived for a smooth learning experience. I would highly recommend a class to anyone who wants to take a deeper dive into Mexican food and culture. Or if you just want some good coffee, stop...
The worst experience. Tourist trap. It reminds us that in Mexico you always have to ask the prices of everything before ordering something, even a coffee! They treated us very kindly at the beginning until the bill arrived, more than 100 pesos for a chocolate with water, 150 pesos for a slice of cake, they "invited" us to try some coffee cherries (which we did not ask for, they offered them to us) and at the end that was added them to the bill. Total more than 500 pesos for 2 chocolates, 2 espressos and a cake. The place is not...
