My family and I had a delicious dinner at Beluga. It is a beautiful 2-story restaurant in Polanco. I saw it on social media and immediately knew it would be the perfect spot for my husband’s birthday dinner, but when we return to Mexico City we will not return to this establishment. Here’s why…

When we arrived at the hostess desk our group of 4 was taken to the very last table in the back of the restaurant opposite the kitchen and bathroom. This would not have been a problem, but the restaurant was practically empty. At the time of our arrival, there were only 3 other tables occupied and yes we had a reservation. It felt very deliberate, but we (I) did not complain. We began ordering our drinks and food, however the smell from the kitchen/dishwashing area/bathroom was very strong and unpleasant. We did not complain. We wanted to enjoy the evening despite the circumstances.

This restaurant is very nice so I thought we were seated in the back based on the way we were dressed, be then I saw a group of 6 walk in with street clothes with a dog. They were seated near the front of the restaurant and they were feeding the dog from the table. I was so confused and a bit uncomfortable and this point.

The Staff was a bit stand-offish at the start of the encounter until my husband, who is Mexican and a native speaker began ordering for the table. Immediately, the attitudes and demeanor changed. Before the arrival of our main courses, the head waiter asked if we would like to move to a table closer to the front. I 100% believe our treatment was deliberate.

This was one of the few trendy and pricey restaurants in CDMX that allowed me to make a reservation for one, and was very welcoming of me as a solo diner. They even gave me a table with a nice view for people watching! Many other restaurants didn’t allow for reservations for one, or would sit me at the bar, which is a pet peeve of mine, especially if I have a reservation.

The service was exceptional, and the food was delicious. I went with my host’s recommendation and ordered the Sultana cocktail (without gin, since I don’t drink hard liquor) and it was refreshing and slightly sweet. I actually finished it as my dessert since I didn’t have any room left for an actual dessert. The berries they used in the drink and as a garnish were so fresh and flavorful.

For food, I ordered a half order (3) of the oysters Rockefeller, and (3) grilled oysters. I wasn’t a fan of the oysters Rockefeller. The parmesan cheese on top of them was too salty for my taste. I did however love the grilled oysters! So much so that I ordered 6 more! I’m very picky when it comes to oysters, especially warm water oysters, and these were fresh and delicious. Also ordered the ribeye chicharron to balance out the seafood heavy meal, and the meat was crispy, salty, tangy, and absolutely delicious.

My entire meal with 20% tip came out to $79.42 (around 1600 pesos). On the pricier side for CDMX, but in line with other trendy restaurants on Masaryk Street. 10/10 dining experience, and highly recommend! They also had valet service, which I didn’t use, but found...

I almost NEVER leave reviews but this one sadly feels necessary. Please please please avoid any raw fish/shellfish dishes at minimum from this restaurant. Lovely ambiance and the restaurant is truly beautiful. The staff is extremely attentive, you probably won’t get much alone time to converse with the person you are dining with kind of attentive. Staff is almost always around the table, but still exceptional service. Onto the food, we started with ceviche, order the A5 Wagyu, oysters (which I think was the nail in the coffin), seafood pasta, lobster Mac and cheese, butterflied fish, & dessert. When I tell you 36hrs after this meal me and my boyfriend were SO sick. We only lasted 4hrs unable to leave the bathroom in our hotel room & in excruciating abdominal/stomach pain before we had to call concierge where we staying to request medical attention. Completely ruined the last 3 days of the trip, we couldn’t hold almost anything in or down and a week later back home went to see our own Doctors and we are on a new set of medications to try to finish putting all of this behind us. Such a shame, but please be careful ingesting anything raw especially fish/shellfish from...
