The restaurant was beautiful and comfortable except it was really cold from the outside breeze. We were seated in the most interior area of the restaurant. The salutations were nice, and the tableside salsa was very, very good, along with the tortillas and the drinks. However, everything went downhill after that. The person who seated us asked us about food allergies, which I gave her. When the food arrived, we still had no napkins or silverware. We had to ask but still received no knives, and paper napkins. Why paper napkins at such a nice, expensive restaurant when even your tortillas were served in cloth napkins? Worse, when the food arrived, one of the dishes had the ingredients I'm allergic to, so I had to scrape it off. Why bother asking about food allergies if you're going to ignore them? Clearly a breakdown in communication.
Aside from the salsa and tortillas and the cocktails, everything else was absolutely terrible. We didn't finish any of the things we ordered. The sopes were not good, very chewy and did not taste fresh, even though the tortillas were wonderful. The octopus was inedible--so tough and chewy. I couldn't eat it because it was so overcooked (and also cold). The beef aguachile was also very chewy--the pieces were cut too thick, and my jaw had a terrible workout. I finally gave up and spit it out on my napkin. There was too much soy sauce and it overwhelmed the flavor of the aguachile and I couldn't taste anything else. The cooks need to learn how to velvet the beef if they're going to serve it like that. The beef marrow was bland, and did not pair well with the sopes as they could not soak up the hot marrow. None of the flavors that were presented in each dish combined well--they were either bland or they fought each other. After trying the 3 starter dishes, we decided to forgo the entrees because it was so terrible. Honestly, it was the worst meal I had in Mexico after 9 days. We had cancelled our dinner reservation at Sud 777 in order to eat at Tezontle, and we were so excited to try because the reviews seemed so positive. We would rather eat on the street in Mexico City than at Tezontle. I am guessing that the chef wasn't there, and whoever was preparing the food was cutting corners and did not follow the original recipes. It started out great, but unfortunately it turned to a very, very disappointing food experience at the very end of our...
Read moreThe restaurant itself is hard to find, but once you find it it's very welcoming and cozy. Just make sure to go through the square parallel to República de Uruguay and you'll get there.
The service was great and the mezcal-based cocktails were delicious. Together with the ambient it seemed to lead us to a great experience. Kudos to the lady in charge of making fresh tortillas and a freshly mixed molcajete salsa. This was very special and tasty.
We ordered a caldo de piedra (stone soup) and tenzontle tlayudas. The soup was okay but very bland for a seafood soup, and it was fairly hard to eat, given that the seafood was kept in its shell. The tlayudas, on the other hand, were very hard to eat and their flavour was off and overbearing, especially the carne enchilada and the grasshoppers. They were unfortunately very close to the worst tlayudas I've ever tried, so I wouldn't recommend them.
The prices were okay for a restaurant of this kind, but given how disappointing the food was, it wasn't very good value for money. Also keep in mind that unlike other restaurants in Mexico, they will push you to leave a min 15% tip.
I don't leave a 2-star review because the service, the drinks, the ambient and the tortilla lady made our lunch pleasant. However, I would recommend the chef to keep working on the menu, since both our dishes looked great, but they didn't taste as good as...
Read moreIt was our first time at Tezontle and we had the tasting menu (referred to as the Chef’s table experience). The menu we chose consisted of mostly seafood that featured Mexican dishes with a cultural fusion twist.
There were 6 total people doing this menu and we were all sat at the bar where we received a very personalized experience watching the chef prepare, present, and discuss the concepts of his menu.
I highly recommend the willingness to treat this as a shared experience as the other group at the bar was very friendly and only increased our enjoyment.
The food was very good and packed aggressive flavors of salt, acidity and heat. Dishes were well presented with fresh ingredients.
My favorite part of the meal was the presentation and discussion of each course with the chef. He described the techniques and concepts behind each dish and was very open to feedback. It was very evident he was dedicated to what he was doing, making the whole experience feel authentic and memorable.
My only criticism is that the restaurant didn’t clearly indicate the tasting menu was coordinated to be started once each party had arrived which resulted in a bit of an awkward delay to start our evening. A simple note to show up 15 - 20 minutes early and enjoy a cocktail would have helped make a short...
