But the hotel suffers in several areas. ||Staff: staff were generally unfriendly and quite disinterested, did not properly ask about our stay upon checkout. When there was a fire alarm at 5 am and we asked about the cause, the staff only laughed and said it was due to a colleague burning something - no apologies for the disruption. There are significant protest encampments outside of the hotel, affecting the nearby roads and ability to get a taxi conveniently. The staff did not make us aware of this until the day before our booking, presumably to avoid us cancelling. The nearby metro is also closed, making this hotels location quite inconvenient. I tried to contact the hotel via booking.com message about a week before our booking, but received no response until the day before. They are more responsive over email. ||Breakfast: breakfast was poor, with an odd choice of items. Dishes that had been finished took a while to replace. The pastries, although claiming to be freshly baked that morning, were stale/tasteless. The selection of fruit was basic: melon, watermelon, pineapple. The selection of teas and coffees was good. There was the option for eggs and chilaquiles. There was a significant portion of the breakfast dedicated to a salad bar, which was a bit of an odd selection for breakfast. Overall there was not enough variety for breakfast. The room which breakfast was held in was lovely and light, and you did have the option to sit outside. ||The room: the room was small, although we did book the lowest level so it is somewhat expected. Not enough lights inside, felt dark with the curtains closed. The moving bathroom / toilet door was not very convenient. The fridge in the room / the minibar is only accessible if you pay a deposit of 200 pesos, which is returned if you do not use any items. This is quite annoying if you just want to use the fridge and not use any items from it. They send someone to come and unlock the fridge after you pay. Upon checkout, you are supposed to get the deposit back, but the receptionist didn’t offer to give it back until reminded. The room was quite dusty. We appreciated the two water bottles each day. ||Overall, I would go elsewhere for your trip. If they improved the staff and the breakfast, then this hotel would be satisfactory. However until that is fixed I cannot recommend...
Read moretl;dr: Great value for money, very comfortable and well located. There were some minor annoying issues but they were all resolved.
Pros: Location: very close to the Zócalo square and the parliament, where there are frequent protests and therefore a very large 24h police presence (so less chance of getting mugged!). I stayed for a week and felt safe walking around day and night. Whilst the Zócalo metro station was closed for the whole time I stayed, the Allende station was open and only a short walk away. Room: clean and comfortable, good air conditioning, strong wi-fi, big and spacious. No noise at all from outside or inside. Service: mostly good, I only had one rude receptionist who seemed to be more interested in filing a bunch of papers than helping me. Get someone else to serve customers while you do that.
Cons (minor things really): The TV only got local channels (except Fox News - yuck) and there was no way to stream/cast to it (you could probably get an HDMI cable in though). My shower broke but a maintenance person fixed it within a couple of hours - not ideal when I just wanted to wash the sunscreen off before going out for the evening. He also walked his dirty shoes all over the bathroom. Housekeeping staff often forgot to restock my water and coffee so I had to call them for this. The mini fridge was locked and I was told I needed to pay a deposit to unlock it so I could store my drinks I bought outside. I asked why a deposit was needed since it was empty and was told I didn't have to pay it after all?! Bizarre. Like most hotels they offer you a drink voucher if you decline housekeeping, but this is just for water or bottled juice - why bother?!
Other: The taco place the receptionist recommended (El Patriarca) about a 5 min walk away had the best Al Pastor tacos I tried in the city. Also go to the Gran Hotel just around the corner just to see the lobby, but if you fancy paying for a drink their bar will give you great views of the sunset...
Read moreI chose this hotel due to its location in the city center and good ratings. I wanted to make the most of a long weekend trip by staying proximate to the main historical attractions. Unfortunately, my room was not cleaned for two days. On the third day, after returning to my hotel, I discovered some personal items were missing. I searched my belongings thoroughly and after two hours of back and forth with the reception, who struggled to understand my request though I explained multiple times and used Google Translate, my items were recovered, causing me great inconvenience. Instead of having a leisurely dinner with my friends, I spent 2 hours trying to get the issue resolved and was almost late to my next obligation. The front desk apologized but did not do anything else, and frankly an apology was not sufficient for the theft and lack of security I received in return for booking the hotel. The breakfast was okay and inconsistent. One day it was cold and the pastries were dry. The next day seemed better. One day, my room service order was missed and deliver far later. I would say the services and experience were unreliable — if you’re counting on hotel services to deliver when you’re on some sort of schedule or to keep your belongings safe, you cannot count on this hotel. One day, a male receptionist advised that I walk three blocks to pick up a ride share — three blocks was a permanent marketplace. I got caught up in the crowds and torrents of people and was stuck in the market for 45 minutes, missing a window of time for going to the Anthropology Museum. He should have known that marketplace was there because it’s a permanent establishment and it seemed like ill will that he knowingly directed me into something that caused great inconvenience. Yes, the location is in the historical center where many tour groups meet or do pick-ups, but it was absolutely not worth it. I felt frightened,...
