We visited this restaurant twice: the first time on a food tour, and the second time on our own for dinner. The food was very good both times--chiles en nogada on the first visit, pork with mole chichilo on the second visit. The service on our second visit was a bit off, though. It took the server several minutes to bring menus after we sat down, even though we were just one of three or four parties at the time. Service was awkward throughout the meal, the server didn't ask if we needed anything, and he didn't refill our water glasses. At the end, when we paid our bill, he told us that the system was down and they couldn't take credit cards. Hmm. Don't you think he might have mentioned that to us earlier on? I wondered if management instructed him to say that so they could avoid credit card fees. In any case, I replied that we didn't have cash and expected to be able to pay with credit card.... Moments later, the server appeared with a hand-held machine, swiped our card, and the bill was paid. Still not sure what that...
Read moreI came here as the place had been recommended and, specifically, the comments kept mentioning the delicious chile en nogada de cerdo. Sadly, I have to report that the dish, while interesting (though not entirely to my taste) gave me a vicious bout of food poisoning.
It was the only thing I had eaten that day (for lunch) so I know that this dish was the one to blame. Also because, apologies for the TMI, I spent most of the night throwing up and only started to feel better once that dish was entirely out of my system.
I'll give the restaurant an extra star because the experience of eating there was pleasant enough and their lemonade was quite tasty, but I did think it was worth mentioning that in my two weeks in Oaxaca, frequently eating at street corners and market stands, this was the only dish that was problematic. And when I say problematic, I mean feel-absolutely-terrible-throw-up-all-night...
Read moreI had a chile enogado here about 9 years ago and it was excellent-- I rated it 5. I have used it as a measure for years. Not so for my visit a few days ago. The chile enogado wasn't terrible. It was big, but the quality was mediocre. The enogado sauce was silky and good, but the pork relleno was lack lustre and low on flavor. The ingredients (fruit, nut, etc.) that I loved last time were sadly missing. It came with rice or plain spaghetti. Meh. The salad was huge and fresh, but not especially tasty. A few months ago, I came for a menu of the day. Plenty of food and it was attractive, but it lacked quality/flavor. Sadly, I rank el Tío Güero mediocre (not bad, just not good) and I won't be returning even though I live within walking distance and...
