La Palapa Cometa — Restaurant in Oaxaca

I am not one to slander small businesses online but I feel that the rating & reviews on google are not remotely indicative of the experience of this restaurant and are very misleading. The staff are sweet but the service was utter chaos, we waited around 30 minutes to be served our drinks and when they arrived half the order was wrong or missing (so waited another 20 mins for the new drinks to arrive). There is blaring loud electronic music at 6pm that we had to ask several times to have turned down, great for a night out but not whilst you are trying to eat dinner. Then the food… wow… I swore it was impossible to have bad Mexican food in Mexico but this really was straight out of a supermarket packet taco filling, no flavour at all, shop bought tomato sauce with a couple of pieces of suspicious octopus and some sad coriander with cheap tomatillo salsa. And not a cheap meal either, the prices compete with the prices of the beach front restaurants (where the food has been much better). It was not an enjoyable experience from the beginning to the end, and when we went to pay the bill we were told there was a mandatory 5% service charge (despite little to no service). My beef burger tasted so weird I thought I had accidentally ordered a black bean burger. The patty broke apart and fell out of the burger, and didn’t taste like beef at all. My partner agreed it tasted like a vegan burger. At least the fries were good.

When we went to pay it took three people 5+ minutes to figure out the bill (we were the only people there). While waiting I had a good hard look at the kitchen—it looked messy and unsanitary; I’m hoping we don’t get sick!

The food is way too mediocre for the price; would not recommend. We ordered two burgers, two fries (not included 😠), and three smoothies; came out to $826...

Intrigued by the good reviews, we went in for dinner. We had cerviche and pesce ajillo. We waited for half an hour and did not get our drinks before the food arrived. An extremely loud live concert (only interrupted by Spotify ads) was playing in the background, which seemed to get the kitchen’s sole attention - a group of party boys. Drinks were watery, cerviche was roughly chopped and barely prepared making us fear for a stomach flu as desribed in other reviews. But the pesce was the worst part - unedible, both tasted and felt like rubber with a hard surface and dry as a shoe sole. Stay away...
