My friends and I visited this place for brunch last week while in Playa del Carmen, and unfortunately, it was a huge letdown. We were a group of four and ordered the avocado toast, an omelette, tacos, and a fruit bowl. None of us left satisfied, and here’s why:
Food Quality: The avocado toast was almost inedible. The bread was stale, the avocado was clearly not fresh, and it was topped with a bland, tasteless sprinkle of seasoning. The omelette was overcooked and rubbery, with hardly any filling. It was more like a sad, dry egg pancake. The tacos were a joke – soggy tortillas, lukewarm fillings, and the flavor was totally off. We’ve had much better from casual street vendors for half the price. The fruit bowl was probably the best item, but even that was disappointing – the fruit was not ripe, and there was nothing special about it. It felt like they just threw in whatever they had left.
Pricing: For the quality of food, the prices are outrageous. I don’t mind paying for good food, but this place was seriously overpriced for what they’re offering. You can find far better food at much more reasonable prices at nearly any other spot in Playa del Carmen.
Service and Atmosphere: To be fair, the atmosphere was okay – typical trendy brunch spot vibes. However, the service was slow. We waited nearly 40 minutes for our food, which was ridiculous considering how basic our order was.
Price of drinks is a rip off.
Overall: This place is all hype with no substance. It feels like they’re banking on the trendy brunch vibe, but the execution is poor in both the food and service. If you’re in Playa del Carmen, do yourself a favor and skip this place. You can find far better options without feeling ripped off. Save your money and appetite for...
Read moreWe ended up here after discovering the Starbucks we were heading to was closed—and honestly, that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Casa Mata is a hidden gem in Playa del Carmen.
As we arrived, we were greeted by the amazing sight (and smell) of fresh tortillas being made right at the entrance on a comal. Always a good sign when a place is packed with locals—we were lucky to grab the last available table.
The coffee and espresso options are solid. I had the cortado, and it easily beat anything you’d get at Starbucks. The orange juice was freshly pressed and incredibly refreshing.
Service was a bit slow, but only because there were just two people working. Despite that, the wait was absolutely worth it.
I ordered the chilaquiles rojos and a huarache with salsa verde. Both dishes were fantastic—flavorful, beautifully presented, and perfectly executed. The standout for me was the salsa verde on the huarache: fresh, spicy, and bursting with flavor. I cleaned both plates faster than it took for them to arrive.
If you’re into great food and coffee in a laid-back setting, look no further. Casa Mata is the spot to eat if you find yourself in Playa del Carmen. Without a doubt, this was my favorite meal...
Read moreOne of the best restaurants experiences we have had here in Playa Del Carmen and just can’t speak enough about the atmosphere the weight staff and the incredible food is presented as impressively as any restaurant we’ve been to and the taste is incredible.
The steaks are cooked right in front on a charcoal grill and you can tell that they really put their heart into not only the establishment but the care they give the Customers and the food itself.
Can’t recommend Casa Mata more highly and with it being a relatively new restaurant really encourage you to give it a try, you won’t be...
